“I used to think I could do it all. I thought I could work full time, be a career mom, raise our kids, and be a wife. I had the idea that I could be everything to everyone.”

Andrea Allen, a driven Physician Assistant, wife, and mother to two young children, confided in a recent interview that, after having her first child, she realized that she needed to slow down her pace. She was working long hours and starting a family at the same time, so she wanted another option outside of spending seven days in a row away from home. She also didn’t want to give up on her career. But even while wanting to conquer everything, she knew deep down that she needed a plan B – she just had no idea what it would be. She found it when a friend told her about the Rodan + Fields® business opportunity. This was a little over a year ago, and since then, her decision to become an Independent Consultant has changed her skin, changed her life, and relieved an enormous weight from her shoulders.

When Andrea’s husband changed careers and decided to go to medical school, the family uprooted from Washington to relocate to Arizona. Her husband was following his dream of becoming a doctor, which is something Andrea fully supported. Still, even though the reward would be worth it in the long run, medical school is a costly endeavor, and a time consuming one. For Andrea, the move also meant leaving her full time job. Fortunately, her Rodan + Fields business supplemented enough of her income so that she and her family could follow where life led them, without the burden of working for someone else or worrying about scraping by. “I have invested a lot into my career as a Physician Assistant and I never want to give it up completely. But I like having the option to pursue it on a part time basis, so that it doesn’t own me.” She also has the option to be a stay at home mom now, which has been a wonderful thing for a new mother who now has a two year old and a four month old baby at home.

In fact, motherhood was part of her motivation behind signing up as an Independent Consultant in the first place. During her first pregnancy, Andrea found herself struggling with adult acne due to hormonal changes. She tried many different treatments, and even after visits to her dermatologist, nothing worked. “I was tired of investing in products that didn’t work for me. When I saw how dramatically my skin improved after trying Rodan + Fields, I was sold on the products.” Her confidence in the skincare line preceded her confidence in the business model, and she says her success in advancing her business comes naturally. “I wear the integrity of the business opportunity on my sleeve in a sense, because people see how great my skin looks now.” She also finds enjoyment in the social aspect of the business, which has helped her get out and meet new people, and make friends she otherwise wouldn’t have met. “Being a mom can be isolating at times, and doing this has been a lot of fun for me. I am meeting more and more people as time goes by, and it’s great to work a business where making friends is part of your job.” Her sister has since joined her team as an Independent Consultant, making it that much more personally rewarding.

When she shares the Rodan + Fields business opportunity with others, Andrea’s goal is to help people with their skin, and help them open their eyes to an opportunity that can help them to be prepared for the unexpected. She has experienced life’s unforeseen obstacles herself, such as having to let go of her job, and her husband’s medical school costs. Then, there were medical bills rolling in for her daughter Charlotte, whose heart condition means she will need surgery at age two. She isn’t worried anymore about those bills, because her family has something to fall back on. “We all get caught off guard by things life throws our way sometimes. I have learned how important it is to have a plan B, and I am so thankful I found mine in Rodan + Fields. I love sharing it with people because I know I’m not alone.”

Secure in the knowledge that she is making her Rodan + Fields business work for her at a time in her life when she needs it the most, she is making plans for the future. Ten years from now, her husband will be finished with his residency and they will both be making plans to continue their medical work in a broader capacity. Their goal is to offer medical services to people who are underserved, and they look forward to a time when they can both make that vision a reality. “My hope is that my Rodan + Fields business will allow me to retire early, so that my husband and I can continue with our love of helping people through medicine.” Recently, Andrea found a very rewarding part time job as a PA that works perfectly alongside her Rodan + Fields business. She is helping patients who are homeless receive the medication and treatments they need after being released from the hospital. “Rodan + Fields has allowed me the flexibility to take this part time job and start on my journey of caring for patients who need my help the most.”
