Bethany Edmonson – Growing into Her Best Self
Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Bethany Edmonson agreed to attend a happy hour meet-up, and as she hung up the phone, a proud smile lit up her face. Social interactions had never been easy for her, and she typically tried to avoid large groups at all costs. Lately, however, she’d found herself saying “yes” to attending more events, as it was becoming less stressful to mingle with strangers. She hadn’t realized it initially, but while working to develop her business, she’d gained a new sense of confidence. Bethany’s business was enabling her to overcome obstacles and inspiring her to be the best version of herself.

The sprouting of an idea

Bethany loved her job as an emergency nurse, and after nearly a decade in her chosen profession, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else. In July of 2012, a good friend shared that she had started her own Rodan + Fields® business and thought Bethany might be interested in the products. Bethany had significant sun damage and decided to try the REVERSE Regimen. “I immediately became a faithful product user—I was shocked at how much it reduced the appearance of my brown spots. I actually love my skin now.”

A year later, Bethany marveled at how significantly her friend’s life had changed—she had earned a Lexus and was enjoying several perks and lifestyle changes as a result of her business. “I called her and said that I wanted to know what she was doing and how she’d built such a successful business that was enabling her to do all of these exciting things.” After learning more about the business opportunity, Bethany decided to give it a try herself.

Gradual growth

In July of 2013, Bethany enrolled as an Independent Consultant, hoping to eventually qualify for the incentive trips and performance bonuses. “Initially, my motivation wasn’t about earning an income—we didn’t need more than what my husband and I were already making. I just thought it would be something fun for me to do, and I was intrigued by the chance to build something of my own. We live a simple life and don’t usually spend money on things like vacations, but I figured if I earned a trip, we would certainly take it!”

Bethany began developing her business around her nursing schedule. She was working twelve-hour shifts three days a week at the hospital and devoted time to R+F on her days off. After five months of working five to eight hours a week, she was able to use her R+F income to completely pay off her student loans and credit card bills. In December of 2013, Bethany and her husband welcomed a baby girl. “It’s really been a blessing to have that supplemental income to help us save more and cover child-related expenses.” Bethany’s R+F income also enabled her to reduce her shifts at the hospital to two days a week, so she can be home with her daughter more frequently.

An eye-opening blossom

As the months went on, Bethany began to get frustrated that her business wasn’t growing as quickly as she’d hoped. “I’ve always been an overachiever, and it bothered me that my progress seemed slow compared to some other Consultants’ achievements. I’m an introvert, and I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression my entire life, so I began to worry that those issues were holding me back, and I wondered if I’d have to deal with those obstacles forever.” Bethany began to question herself. One evening, as she contemplated what direction she wanted her business to go and what she wanted it to accomplish for her family, her husband mentioned how much change he’d noticed within her since she’d started her business. “He said I’d really blossomed and that he saw me putting myself out there more and attending social events that I never would’ve gone to before. He helped me realize that the personal and emotional growth I’ve experienced is more of an achievement than any amount of money I could ever potentially make. This experience has energized me and pushed me to grow. It’s affected my entire well-being and inspired me to become a better me.”

Bethany’s business has also helped her open up to others and become more comfortable talking about her struggles. “I used to keep anything personal to myself and was a very private person, but R+F has enabled me to share my story. I feel that dealing with my anxiety is a significant part of my journey, and now I’m more willing to discuss that part of my life. I don’t think depression defines me, and I think that by sharing my experiences, I can help others who face similar issues. I don’t think I am meant to struggle with those obstacles forever, and I’ve already seen significant progress as a result of my time with R+F. It truly brings out the best in me.”

Pruning the stems

Although she was apprehensive about the crowd, Bethany decided to attend the 2015 R+F Convention in Austin, Texas, and found the experience completely rewarding. Stepping out of her comfort zone and partaking in social activities has given Bethany the chance to connect with new people and establish several great friendships. “After surrounding myself with so many like-minded people—of all ages, from all over the country, and with so many different backgrounds—I was so inspired. I knew if they could do it, so could I.”

Bethany returned with a newfound belief in herself and the determination to never give up. She is now looking forward to growing her business, creating more options for her family and, in the process, continuing to become a better mom, wife, nurse, and friend. “Even though everyone’s business is individualized and no one’s story will be the same, R+F empowers us all to be our best possible selves.”

Blooming success

Bethany’s business has taught her that comparing her journey to someone else’s will never help her progress. “We all face obstacles, but each day I am given the opportunity to face my fears and overcome whatever is standing in my way. My business inspires me to work harder because I know I have what it takes to be successful. It’s exciting to see how much I’ve grown thus far—and I won’t stop giving my all because it continues to bring out the best in me.”

This is so beautiful, thank you so much for sharing this story!! Though, like you said, each story and business is individualized, this story rings so true for me. I had become borderline recluse before I was introduced to Rodan+Fields. Dealing with postpartum depression was squeezing the life out of who I used to be, but through the persistence of dear friends and a will to succeed, I’ve been able to overcome those struggles. This business has brought so much more than a great paycheck to my life, it’s been a life preserver!!! Congratulations on your journey. And continued success to you!

Bethany, your story has revealed to me that each one of us struggles with something, whether it is physical or mental (or even both). I am reminded to get out of my own way and overcome those inner self doubts, because other peoples’ perception of who I am is totally different than how I see myself….Thanks for your story.

I cried as I read this! My upline sent this to me today as I absolutely 100% relate. I struggle daily with all of these same issues and find it incredibly inspiring that you’ve found a way to incorporate R+F into your personal growth. I can only hope that I will be able to do the same.

    Thanks for sharing your story.
