Bonn Brown and Craighton Cooper – Taking Control of Their Future

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Monday, September 8th, 2014

Two years ago, Bonn Brown and Craighton Cooper found themselves at a crossroads, looking ahead at their future. A flight attendant for a major airline for the last 24 years, Bonn was tired of having a corporation make decisions for him. After 9/11, the airline had experienced significant financial trouble, which led to many cuts in pay, vacation time, health care benefits, and having his Pension frozen. Craighton, a paint contractor, owns his own business, which has experienced a lot of ups and downs with the economy, and he knew that climbing ladders for the rest of his life was not a viable option. But both were eager for a plan B, something that would allow them to have control over their financial future. Bonn adds, “We had to start making some career choices. We thought, ‘Where will we be in five years if we don’t do something?’ Probably right where we’re at today.”

Hearing about the opportunity with Rodan + Fields® and feeling a little leery about the business, Bonn had Craighton attend a meeting while he was traveling for work. When he returned, they looked into the business further and, believing in the Doctors’ reputations and feeding off the positive energy they felt, they decided to take a chance. With a drawer full of skin care products that never worked, Bonn was impressed that the REVERSE Regimen cleared up sun spots that dermatologists had told him would never go away. Craighton was more interested in the business perspective and what it could do for them. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Craighton says, “but we knew we wanted to be a part of it. And two years in, we have not looked back.”

It was a big challenge for Bonn to adjust to an entrepreneurial mindset. “I had always been a clock puncher, so there was a learning curve. You need a lot of discipline to own and run your own business.”

But Bonn and Craighton both knew that it was their business, and that it would be as successful as they wanted it to be. Despite the fact that they both still work full time jobs, they are dedicated to working their business and have made immense progress doing it in part-time hours. For Bonn, the business fits perfectly into his flight attendant schedule. He works from home when he isn’t flying and shares the business when he is traveling. “But it’s nice to have Craighton here to take care of everything when I am away for work. One of the things we have found in this business is that it’s incredibly helpful and important to have the support of your spouse.”

Recognizing that their skill sets are very different, Bonn and Craighton have found that they complement each other nicely, with Bonn doing a lot of the sharing and upfront networking and Craighton managing most of the back office, working with local networking groups, and coaching new team members on getting started with their businesses. Craighton is impressed with how much partnering with R+F has done for them. “We’ve experienced such personal growth and it has challenged us to step outside of our comfort zones. We are now out there expanding our network and making new friends.”

Bonn and Craighton are blown away by the incredible people they’ve met, the humble corporate leaders, and the business model itself. Meeting the Doctors and other corporate leaders has reinforced the commitment and belief they have in the Company vision. Bonn says, “What other company allows individuals to share in the journey financially, personally, and emotionally? We are constantly rewarded for growing our business. I’m nearing the 25 year mark with the airline I work for and, at that point, all I’ll get is a fancy certificate. It shows what an amazing family R+F is and what a unique and amazing opportunity this business is. It’s a Company we want to be associated with.” Craighton adds, “Seeing someone so high up in a corporation, being so present and getting their hands dirty, doing whatever it takes to make sure every Consultant is happy and taken care of is something that, after many years in the corporate world prior to owning my own business, I had never seen. It was very impressive to see that at the 2013 Dallas Convention.”

Owning their business has allowed Bonn and Craighton to dream again. They are able to plan for their future as well as realize personal goals and freedoms. Previously picking up extra flights to make up for airline pay cuts, Bonn has already reduced the number of flights he takes per month from five to three, which had been 100+ flight hours per month and down to around 60 flight hours per month. This has enabled Bonn to spend more time at home and devote more time to their R+F business. “I still love my job and enjoy traveling, but as our R+F earnings replace my flight attendant income, it’s nice to have the freedom to fly less.”

Planning to retire Craighton, giving more to charities they are passionate about, and helping family members are just a few of the things on the horizon as their business continues to thrive. “We have been given this amazing gift. We are hoping and dreaming again and to know that we are supported and to see how down to earth and humble the Doctors are, re-enforces that all of our dreams are very real possibilities.”

Bonn and Craighton are grateful for the opportunity to take back control over their financial future.

Making a decision that gave them the freedom to make choices again made Bonn and Craighton realize that with a little desire and a vision, they could accomplish their goal of creating a future they had some control over while achieving the financial means to do the things that are important to them. Their experience has taught them that it’s important to ride the highs and lows, to stay steady and never quit. “If you want something better for yourself, you have to get out of your own way. Believe in yourself because you are capable,” Bonn advises. “I know now that I am capable of doing a lot more than I thought. I’ve learned to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone. And I try to do that every day because the rewards have been huge.”

Feeling the relief that comes with taking back control of their financial future has encouraged Bonn and Craighton to share their business and help others live their dreams, without the stress of job insecurity. Bonn adds, “Everyone wants to be secure and know they will be alright, especially in this economy. We know this business opportunity is a way to help others in that struggle. We see that by taking control of our future, we can make our dreams a reality.”
