Bonnie Sloan – Achieving a Calming Peace

Posted by on Tuesday, December 19th, 2017

Bonnie Sloan first learned about Rodan + Fields in 2009 when Becky Cox, her daughter’s first-grade teacher, approached her one day at church. “Becky handed me her business card and invited me to a meeting to celebrate her new business, but at the time I had a toddler and two other children, my husband Ben traveled every week, and I was taking care of my mom who had Alzheimer’s. It was very stressful trying to manage everything, get everything done, and hurry from one place to another. We both knew I could never go to a meeting on a Tuesday night!” Looking back now, Bonnie realizes she had no idea what she was turning down.

In a former life, Bonnie had enjoyed her career as a traditional business owner, but sold the business to stay home and raise her children. As the years passed, however, she still wanted to contribute financially to her family. “With three kids in private school and college on the horizon, I felt the need to bring in some extra money. However, I knew I didn’t want to get a traditional job. I liked being my own boss, but I just hadn’t found the right fit at that time.” Thankfully, the R+F opportunity came back into her life at the perfect moment.

Destiny comes knocking again

Two years after Becky Cox first reached out to share the business, Bonnie’s venture capitalist brother-in-law asked if she had heard of Rodan + Fields. “After being reminded again, I just couldn’t get the idea out of my head. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the opportunity I had let go.” She started avidly following Becky’s posts on social media and was fascinated with the success and the fun she saw these Consultants having.

Bonnie was curious enough to inquire further the next time she saw her friend. “I wasn’t sure if sales would turn out to be my channel, but when I found out Rodan + Fields was all website-based and would go with me wherever I went, I was convinced. I could do this work in the carpool line, at the ballet studio, or from the baseball field. It was the perfect opportunity to weave into my day and around my busy life. I was not going to miss out on this!” After one evening of using the products, Bonnie returned to Becky and enrolled as an Independent Consultant in October 2011.

A handful of dreams

Though Bonnie didn’t know much about her new career, she was encouraged by Becky’s simple instructions to just “‘wash your face and talk to people!’ I thought, I can definitely do those two things!” She told her husband that she was starting a new business, and Ben was totally supportive of her plan.

“He was curious about when I would find time for the work with my busy schedule, but my family members all did their part and became my ‘board of directors.’ I plugged away, 30-35 hours per week, hosting events and learning the ropes of my new business. It’s so important to me now to pour into my team so they can be as successful as they want to be, because I know firsthand how hard it is. My plate was full, so I just decided that I was going to get a platter. I realized R+F was the only thing I had ever come across that would deliver the life I envisioned for myself.”

And although she endured a few discouraging moments, Bonnie felt compelled to keep going. “I knew I would figure this out eventually. I truly believed that this business was the answer to my prayers.” Her initial ‘why’ was retiring her husband so he wouldn’t have to be away from home. Bonnie laughs, explaining that “replacing my husband’s income became my big, hairy, audacious goal! I wanted to be a parent with him. I wanted to do life with him, and my number one priority was gaining more time with my family.”

Walking the stage

Five months into her new career, a Leadership Summit provided Bonnie’s biggest motivation yet. “I was really attracted to the caliber of professionals that were in the room with me, and knew that I was in the right place with the right people. But when I saw Sarah Robbins and Kris Fairless recognized on stage, I was in awe. I was sitting in the very back row of the ballroom, but I decided that I would be on that stage with the Doctors one day.”

Within four years, Bonnie’s dream became a reality. Her husband was able to retire, and the family recently moved to Boca Raton. “I had always envisioned moving back to South Florida, so that was really amazing. I also envisioned walking the streets of the world together, holding hands with my husband. When our 20th wedding anniversary trip began in Barcelona, I broke down crying because we were finally doing it. We were living our dream. I just remember thinking throughout the trip that this experience was so worth it.”

As an RFX Circle Achiever, Bonnie is in awe of the massive transformation that has occurred in all areas of her life. “It’s taken a lot of hard work and personal development, but I now have the time, peace, and calm that I always wanted. It was very moving and emotional to walk down to the second row of the arena at Convention and sit right behind the Doctors. I teared up just thinking about how I started in the very back row, and now here I am!”

Her message of hope

“This business has shown me that everybody has a story. Everyone on BIG TEAM (Believe. Inspire. Grow.) has goals and dreams, and I’m passionate about helping them discover that they can make it, too. They are the reason I’m here today. I love showing people that their Rodan + Fields business can be their vehicle to community, freedom, peace, calm, and generous giving. Like the Doctors, I wanted to be the kind of person that would leave a legacy. You really can change the world if you work hard and commit to your dreams.”

Tell Me More…

What one word do you most relate to? Belief. In my business and in life, it is my over-the-top, unshakable belief that empowers me, propels me, and gives me confidence.

What hobby would you like to take up? Painting. I can envision myself standing on the grounds of a castle in Europe and painting the countryside.

Have there been any especially significant people in your R+F journey? Definitely my husband, Ben, and my children. I could never have accomplished everything without their unwavering support and encouragement.

What was the biggest R+F hurdle you overcame? Understanding that not everyone has the vision, drive, or energy required to be an entrepreneur and go the distance from the very beginning.

Best advice you’ve ever received? Don’t settle for mediocrity. Always strive for excellence, because then nothing is impossible.
