Dame McDonough – The Voyage Out
Monday, January 20, 2014

For the past ten years, Dame McDonough felt like just another knob on the wheel of corporate America. He entered the field of corporate sales and marketing in his early twenties, and over the years he discovered it was not the kind of environment he wanted to be in, nor was it the kind of life he wanted. He saw himself ten years down the road having spent the prime of his life slaving away for someone else, with no control over the direction his future would take. He watched with anxiety as offices downsized and people around him got laid off. At age thirty-two, he didn’t want to work for a company that might tell him at age fifty-two that he is no longer needed. He started looking for a way out of the corporate world, and relates, “I told myself I would take the nearest exit.”

Sometimes we don’t see the nearest exit, even when it’s right in front of us. We need someone or something to turn on a light, if we can’t find it ourselves. For Dame, that light was the one that lit up the exit sign that would show him the way out of corporate America. For months, he had been watching his sister Marissa excel as an Independent Consultant for Rodan + Fields®. But even though she encouraged him to join her team, he didn’t seize the opportunity initially. He readily admits that early on, he had no interest in the business. “I was flat-out hostile to my sister at first. I thought I knew everything about it, and I found out I actually knew nothing.” Finally realizing his presumptions were holding him back, he started to pay closer attention, asking questions and listening with an open mind. He ultimately made the decision to launch his own Rodan + Fields Independent Consultantship, and is now grateful that his sister showed him the light. Still, there was more ahead to learn.

“I really had to take a step back and allow myself to be coached. The rules that apply to the corporate world I came from do not apply here, and that was very humbling and eye-opening for me. The culture and philosophy of Rodan + Fields is a whole different ballgame, built on personal relationships and mutual support. I had to learn to be a better listener, and to become better at sharing my story.”

Now at the age of thirty-five, Dame has different motivations than many of his peers who join the business. He isn’t saving for his children’s college fund because he doesn’t have children, and he is not partnered in the business with a wife like some of the other men who have become Independent Consultants. “I don’t have family as a motivation for making my business successful. My driving force that gets me enthused and excited about making sure my Rodan + Fields business succeeds is my determination to be in control of my own life. I don’t want someone else calling all the shots, I want to call the shots. I’m taking my future into my own hands.” For the past three years he has worked his Rodan + Fields business ten hours a week around his full-time corporate job, but his goal for 2014 is to leave corporate America completely behind him.

Dame and his girlfriend enjoying freedom

Dame has not only taken his future into his own hands, but he has also filled the present with much more meaning and personal fulfillment. He feels that he is doing something now that gives him professional purpose; instead of being locked into the typical forty-hour work week, he has a reason and a desire to work his business in his own time, and in his own way. With his earnings he doesn’t have to spend the next several decades of life toiling away in hopes that there’s enough money for when he retires, he can instead dream of possibilities. “I don’t want to wait until I’m older to travel the world. I want my girlfriend and I to enjoy travel now while we’re young and healthy, and Rodan + Fields is giving me the option to make that a reality. I am very excited about my business, and about my future. I hope that by sharing my story others will see the potential of how this business could change their lives. It is an unparalleled opportunity, and we’re just now getting started.”

Awesome story Dame. I can tell you from someone who has spent 20 years in professional selling- YOU ARE MAKING A SMART MOVE EARLY. It took me a bit longer to realize but I am joining your path. I want my time to be my time not someone else’s. I am sure we will see each other at many RF events in the future.

  9. Dame, it’s incredible that you have the vision of what could happen. I was that one who did stay with the same company for 24 years, working my way to the top. I even gladly told everyone I was “married to my job.” After being told “You make too much money” (after growing them from 12-28 million) me and the job I was married to got a “divorce.” Now I’m building my RF business because I know no one can take that away from me. You had the vision to see the way corporate America treats you… you are very smart! Keep building your business! Rock on!

  12. After a long career in corporate America working your way up the ladder, it can be difficult to believe there’s another way or to give merit to opportunities that look different. I’m glad you overcame your presumptions and found this blue ocean of opportunity with R+F, like I did. I’m enjoying camaraderie, person growth, and freedom I never would’ve known… congratulations on a smart decision.
