Dawn Tousley – Slow and Steady Strength

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Thursday, July 26th, 2018

Dawn Tousley began her Rodan + Fields journey after an economic downturn, when both her and her husband’s jobs in the real estate industry fell through. “It took eight months for my husband to find another job, and I didn’t have too many viable opportunities without a college degree. We were struggling so hard financially, facing foreclosure and bankruptcy with zero savings left. It was a really sad phase for me. The overwhelming financial stress was just so much. So, I turned my attention to a field I was familiar with and started working again as a personal trainer.”

While working double shifts at the gym to make ends meet, Dawn met the woman who would become her R+F Sponsor. “When I first met Donna Bennett, she was a beautiful woman in her 60’s, walking into the gym with porcelain-looking skin. I had always wanted pretty skin, and that was the first thing I noticed about her. In the past I had used countless prescriptions, facials, microdermabrasion treatments, and expensive skincare products I didn’t have the money for. When she introduced me to Rodan + Fields, I was very intrigued and wanted to try the products.” When Donna explained she owned her own skincare business, Dawn immediately saw R+F as her ideal Plan B — a decision she would later feel extremely grateful for when her family faced even greater adversity.

Fighting for life

Dawn became a Rodan + Fields Independent Consultant in November 2011 and enjoyed building her business alongside her personal training career, putting in an extra 10-15 hours per week. “I’d always wanted to own my own business. I just didn’t know what that would look like. Everything changed a year and a half later, on Valentine’s Day 2013, when I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, which had metastasized to my bones. I knew if I was going to try to survive, I had to take action. I started very aggressive treatment immediately.”

At the time, Dawn knew she wouldn’t be able to fulfill her duties as a trainer. “After five years of training, I said goodbye to the gym and my Plan B quickly became my Plan A. I realized then I had an incredible opportunity sitting in my lap.” Through months of extensive chemotherapy, radiation, and both a hysterectomy and a bilateral mastectomy — Dawn worked her Rodan + Fields business between appointments when she felt up to the task.

Gratitude for R+F

Unfortunately, Dawn’s journey toward health wasn’t the only challenge the Tousley family endured during this time. “All that time, I knew something was wrong with my son. I’ve always been his rock, and when I was diagnosed he went down a very dark road and fell into addiction. Over the course of the past five years we’ve had our ups and downs, and he’s doing very well now. But I always explain to people — fighting cancer was nothing compared to watching my baby fight for his life. Knowing my son is happy, healthy, and clean is something I’m just so thankful for.”

Today Dawn has been proudly cancer-free for five years, and feels grateful for the way her Rodan + Fields business supported her when she needed it most. “I honestly feel like my business saved me emotionally. All during this time, building my business lifted my spirits and kept me focused on something besides cancer and addiction. I was also thankful to have the R+F products — because even though I was bald, and despite the sick, ashy color people get from chemo, these products helped me feel pretty. I’m thankful Rodan + Fields gave me the opportunity to take care of myself without worrying about any other job responsibilities. My business gave me inspiration and hope.”

Building a supportive community

The relationships Dawn built across the Rodan + Fields community during this time also touched her in ways she could have never imagined. “I’m a very spiritual person, and having people nationwide thinking about me and praying for me was just absolutely incredible. I’ll never forget when Becky Cox and her husband Ron earned their Lexus while I was going through chemo. At their Lexus celebration, people on and outside of my team came together to hold a huge fundraiser for me to help pay for my medical bills. I didn’t have many friends prior to joining R+F, so the support and love I received from everybody was something I never thought I would have.”

A quote Dawn always loved states: “If you believe in yourself and all that you are, know there’s something inside you greater than any obstacle.” With help from her community and an incredible source of inner strength, Dawn was able to make this quote a reality. “My ‘why’ when I started Rodan + Fields was definitely to support our family financially. Now, even though my ongoing treatment is expensive, I’m able to do so much more. My husband is such an amazing man and was my caregiver during all this time. I dream of traveling the world and enjoying precious time with him. I also want to inspire others on Team Triumphant and beyond. That is the fire in my belly that keeps me going.”

Looking forward to a brighter future

Dawn is currently a Level V Achiever with her sights set on Premier, but measures her true success on a much deeper level. “I’m a slow and steady worker and I’ve had to rebuild my team on and off because of the things I went through. A lot of people call me ‘Miss Overcomer’ and it’s obviously very emotional for me to achieve successes in this business. But beyond that, I want to inspire others with my belief in this business and with my fire and grit. I want to help others who may be struggling with what I went through. I want to give people inspiration and hope by sharing this business — and if this vehicle changes their life for the better, I feel like I’ve accomplished something good.”

Tell Me More…

What one word do you most relate to? Triumph. Overcoming adversity and cancer has made me rethink what I consider to be triumphant. That’s why I named my R+F team: Team Triumphant.

Words to live by? Always be humble and kind — never give up hope.

Favorite R+F product? Lash Boost! It helped me achieve the appearance of lush, longer-looking lashes.

What is your favorite R+F Convention moment? When I was at an R+F Summit in Nashville (a few short months into my business), I was in awe of the leaders that were recognized on the stage. There were only a few. After the event, I stood in a circle with other R+F Consultants and we took a vow that we would never give up — we would all be up on that stage one day!
