Elizabeth Dunn – The Journey Is the Destination
Friday, April 11, 2014

Life is about the journey, not the destination. We’ve heard that quote so many times that it’s easy to overlook it, or forget its meaning. But sometimes the most valuable lessons in life come in the simplest packages; the ones so obvious that we take them for granted. Everyone is striving for something, because we all have goals. Maybe it’s a better job, or a larger house. Maybe it’s to reach a certain time in life when we’re free to slow down. In the meantime, though, life is happening. And if you’re always waiting for the next good thing, you miss what’s already happening every day.

Elizabeth Dunn's focus is to always live in the moment and value every day.

Elizabeth Dunn’s focus is to always live in the moment and value every day.

Elizabeth Dunn has learned the importance of appreciating the day-to-day in her life. Recognizing and valuing life’s travels is the most important aspect to her personal life, and to her Rodan + Fields® business, which she started last year. After working from home as a Lead Analyst for several years, she realized that she wasn’t being the kind of stay-at-home mom she had set out to be when she chose a home-based career. Instead of her job giving her the freedom to appreciate her days at home with her three children, she found herself chained to a desk, staring at a computer screen, with her back to them. “That just wasn’t working for me anymore, because I need to interact with people, and above all, I need to be interacting with my children.”

When a friend introduced her to Rodan + Fields, she was attracted to the business  for several reasons. “I liked the flexibility it would allow, and the fact that it could give me the opportunity to help people develop and see them grow. Another huge factor for me was that this is a business I can take with me wherever I go.” Her husband’s job allows Elizabeth and her family to move frequently, so having something she could maintain no matter where life’s travels take them was a key factor in her decision to enroll as an Independent Consultant.

Each time we move, we have to start over. There is finding a new pediatrician, a new hairdresser, all of it. But my Rodan + Fields business is always there, and each place we go, instead of having to start over, I keep building relationships. It’s a continuous journey.”

Elizabeth treasures the fact that life’s adventures lead her to meet fascinating people, many of whom decide to join her team. They are single moms who are trying to figure out a way to give their children everything they want; they are professionals in corporate America who feel trapped in their current jobs. They are people who have been disappointed by empty promises, but who still are willing to take a leap of faith to try something new. Being able to offer them all the opportunity to build something for themselves with actual tangible value is part of the reason Rodan + Fields holds Elizabeth’s interest, because she loves to push people beyond what they thought possible. And that isn’t something that happens overnight; it is a steady accumulation of daily progress.

Elizabeth compares her business to life itself, and like life, it has come with triumphs and setbacks, rejections and acceptance. Through all the ups and downs, she has become stronger and more resilient. “It’s kind of like a tough workout. Just when it’s hardest to go on, if you can push yourself just a little more at that point, that’s where change happens. So often I hear people say they tried their best, and I think that mindset allows them to take a backseat to success. My goal is to show them they don’t ever have to take a backseat.”

Because of Rodan + Fields, Elizabeth has been able to spend valuable time with her three children.

Elizabeth has started life anew in Florida, Ohio, Georgia, and Tennessee. Each move offers new insights, new people, and new opportunities to learn and show her children that no matter where they go, some things in life will never change. It’s easy to think of each new stop as a destination, but with the right mindset, each new city, like each new day, is just another pin stuck in a long, endlessly-fascinating and fulfilling journey. You have to evolve with it, and that is why Elizabeth’s adventure through life, as well as with her Rodan + Fields business, is never about a singular goal or ultimate destination. “At the end of the day, if I go to bed feeling like I did everything I could to make the lives of the people around me a little better, then I have been a success.”
