Elizabeth Haynes – A New World

Posted by on Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

We have all felt afraid at some time in our lives. Maybe that fear was a passing, irrational one, like a childhood fear of the dark or a monster under the bed. As we grow into adults, true fear is something that only surfaces when there is a more rational reason: an immediate threat to our safety, or a diagnosis with a grave medical condition. But for people who suffer from agoraphobia, fear is something to confront on a daily basis, and whether it is rational or not, it is very real. Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder that causes sufferers to avoid situations that might trigger severe panic attacks, and it can be a debilitating condition. Elizabeth Haynes knows all too well the struggles that come with living with it, something she has been dealing with for nearly twenty-five years.

“What a lot of people don’t understand is that, for someone with agoraphobia, simply walking out the bedroom door is a challenge.” For almost twenty years, Elizabeth would rarely leave her home and felt that she was virtually trapped. On days she did attempt to leave her house, she faced an inward battle. She had to talk herself into leaving her bedroom, and then coax herself into the hallway and toward the door. If she wanted to get the mail outside, she would wait to make sure no one was coming before she tentatively opened her front door. Ordinary daily tasks that most of us take for granted, like a trip to the grocery store, were obstacles she had to try to overcome. For most of her adult life, Elizabeth’s world was very small. Five years ago, however, her world became much larger.

Elizabeth Haynes found a new world of opportunity with Rodan + Fields.

Elizabeth Haynes found a new world of opportunity with Rodan + Fields.

Donna Tisdale and Melinda Hickey had helplessly watched their sister struggle with her disorder over the years. They stood by her when her marriage ended, and helped as much as they could as Elizabeth raised her son and two daughters on her own. They knew that deep down their sister was a brave soul who was living a life that was less than what it had the potential to be. In 2009, they saw that Rodan + Fields® could be an avenue for Elizabeth to reclaim her life, and encouraged her to start her own business as an Independent Consultant. Naturally, she at first resisted their offer.

“I was the least likely candidate for this as someone who had rarely left her own home or backyard for so long. I had no social contacts, and felt extremely uncomfortable in any type of social situation. But as my sisters drew me into Rodan + Fields, I found myself in a whole new world. And that was what they were hoping for. The training and support I received from them gave me the courage I needed that allowed me to create success.”

Against all odds, Elizabeth braved this new world her sisters had introduced her to, where everything was wildly beyond her comfort zone. Everything she needed to learn to be successful meant overcoming her condition, and that included speaking in public, which she had never considered as even a remote possibility. She remembers the fear she felt the first time she stood on stage and told her story in front of a hundred of her Rodan + Fields teammates. Under what seemed like the most glaring light in the world, she was sure she would melt into a puddle on the floor. Instead, she braved that day and has since braved many more. And even though she still struggles with agoraphobia, it isn’t controlling her life or holding her back.

Donna and Melinda have watched their sister, who was once too afraid to leave her room, blossom into the woman she is today. She is a woman who, against the odds, has become a champion for other women who have had the same challenges. Because she found the inner strength to conquer her fear and tell her story, dozens of others with the illness have reached out to her to share their own stories. What she wants them to know, and what she wants everyone to know, is that if she could beat the odds that were stacked against her and make her Rodan + Fields business a success, anyone can.

“I am a sixty-two-old woman, and had been out of the workforce for twenty years when I started this. I had no experience, and on top of that I have a social phobia. In spite of all that, I created a thriving business that put all three of my children through college, debt-free.”

Elizabeth found strength and support in her sisters. As a Rodan + Fields team, they are referred to as "Superstars".

Elizabeth, Donna, and Melinda, known in their business as the “Superstar Sisters” because they have all reached Level V, have grown closer through their shared Rodan + Fields journey. There is nothing quite like the kind of love that exists between sisters. It is the kind of love that finds you even if you think you are alone in the dark, trapped inside a tiny world of fear and isolation. Who better to turn on the light and show you that there is a brighter and bigger world? A sister who has been there when you were a little girl and afraid to peek your toe from under the covers for fear of the monster under the bed, or the sister who makes you laugh at yourself and pushes you to open up and embrace change. Elizabeth is grateful to have not one, but two sisters who have done that for her.

“I can say with conviction that I would have had a much smaller world without my Rodan + Fields business, and every day I am reminded how proud my children are of me for having the courage to push myself. I am thankful to my sisters who saw, when I couldn’t, what this opportunity would do for me, and for the love I feel from my entire Rodan + Fields family. This has truly created a whole new world for me.”
