Emily Barenbrugge – Breaking Free from Convention

Posted by on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

In today’s fast-paced world, we often end up devoting so much of our lives to our careers that when we finally do get some time off, we are too drained to fully enjoy it. Emily Barenbrugge is one such person who managed to escape that cycle and live life to its fullest without the constraints placed upon the overburdened worker.

A sudden priority shift

Emily was very happy in her career as a dental hygienist. She loved the daily interaction with her patients, and, despite the long working hours, she envisioned staying there until she retired. But, nine years ago, when she had her first child, her outlook shifted. “When I held my son in my arms, I knew there was no way I could go back to that job.” It would be impossible, in her eyes, to manage her 10-hour shifts and long commute while still being a present mom. “At the end of a day’s work, you are physically sore and mentally exhausted. When you get home you have no energy left to devote to those you love.”

So Emily didn’t return to work, and over the following four years, she and her husband had two more kids. In the meantime, her husband opened his own retail business, and, while business was good, the growing family began to exceed their income. The day came when they accepted that Emily was going to have to return to full-time dental work. “It broke my heart because I knew that it meant missing out on all the important moments of my kids’ childhoods. But I also knew it wasn’t fair to put all this pressure on my husband.”

A fierce ambition

Emily knew that any job she found would have to pay enough to offset daycare costs for the three children and leave enough left over to contribute to the household expenses. Working from home would be the ideal solution. A few months prior, a trusted friend had mentioned the Rodan + Fields business model to her, but she hadn’t really given it much thought. But after seeing how her friend’s business had grown, Emily decided to find out more. Once the business was explained to her, she didn’t hesitate to join as an Independent Consultant in October 2014. “I could see that the Company was going places, with or without me. So I jumped right in!”

While Emily was brand new to the world of business, she did have a clear and powerful motivation. “The goal was, within a few months, to be able to pay our mortgage while still being at home every day with my kids.” And Emily is not one to give up on a dream. “If I say I’m going to do something, I do whatever it takes to achieve it,” she exclaims. She used that powerful confidence and drive to excel with her R+F business, and, working 10 hours a week, she met that goal in the first month. Five months later, she reached Level V, and within a year, Emily had matched her previous salary.

Earning to live, not living to earn

Now, a little more than two years in, Emily works her ever-expanding business 15-20 hours a week, from home. “I work it around my family. I never have to sacrifice any time with my kids—they always come first.” She is proud that her husband no longer has to shoulder the family finances alone, and he is now able to have a day off from time to time. “This business has financially benefited my family in a way I never could have even imagined.”

The sweetest part of Emily’s new career is the freedom; the precious time she can spend with her family without financial pressure. She has found a way to truly live life and make a living. “Not only am I making more money now, I am able to enjoy myself at the same time.” She has big dreams for the future, including plans to qualify as a Lexus Achiever by the end of the year and to retire her husband in less than two years. “I always seek to be the best. And I want my kids to see that they can do whatever they want. They can be a parent while rocking a business; there are no limits.”
