Fran Misener – Looking Forward to What’s Next

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018

Back in 2015, Fran Misener was discussing with a co-worker and friend named Michelle about making more money each year. “Being a teacher is amazing, but substantial raises are hard to come by and at times raises might not happen at all if the pay scale is frozen. Even as someone who has taught for 12 years and has a Master’s degree plus 30 extra credits, I’m still not at the top of the pay scale.” Even so, when Michelle shared that a friend was successfully running her own Rodan + Fields business and contributing to major bills with her monthly earnings, Fran wasn’t interested.

“Ironically, I said a hard and fast ‘No’ to R+F. I was convinced I didn’t have time for something like that. I had two children, Michelle had three, and our schedules were full.” Fast forward to July, when another friend announced she was going to become an Independent Consultant. This time, Fran was ready to give the opportunity a try. “I went home and told my husband I was not going back to the pool next summer knowing my friend was on her way to earning a Lexus if I didn’t even try. I had a major fear of missing out.”

Growing in new ways

With encouragement from Rob, her finance-minded husband, Fran jumped on a phone call and joined her cousin’s Rodan + Fields team in New Jersey. “As a former college athlete, I’m competitive, I’m type A, and I’m driven. So from early on I really just put my nose to the grindstone. I worked 10 hours per week, mainly while my kids were sleeping, and not because I had to — but because I really enjoyed it!”

Pretty soon, Fran found her Rodan + Fields business was helping her learn and grow both professionally and personally. “One of the best perks about R+F was that it’s completely different from my existing career. By working hard, really putting myself out there, and doing a lot of growth and development, I learned I could no longer hide behind an email. Because I had to go in person and talk to people, my confidence grew. R+F helped me in my real job as an instructional coach and my real life as a wife and mom. I started to pound the pavement, approach people, have conversations, and drum up business for both coaching and R+F.”

The biggest challenge

Fran’s life turned completely upside down in 2017. She was running for Level V Circle in the midst of one of her most challenging months in business and in her life. “Month two of qualifications was May, and that’s also when I found a lump in my right breast. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 years old. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, and I’m extremely active with two young girls — I didn’t think I would ever be faced with a challenge like that.”

May also marked another milestone: Fran and Rob’s 10-year anniversary, which they spent at a surgeon’s appointment to prepare for her upcoming double mastectomy. “And by the end of July, I earned my Level V Circle trip. I finished up my treatment in September, had surgery in October, and finished up radiation in January. On February 26, 2018, I had a clean scan… and we went to Banff in March with R+F, to celebrate my business accomplishments, being cancer free, and our ten-year wedding anniversary (a year late).”

Finding her way

Now back to work and finishing up a school administration degree, Fran is excited to focus on building her business once again. “Throughout this whole process, my Rodan + Fields business has been such a safety net for my family. It was such a comfort having a business that I didn’t have to create on my own. Literally, I would go to treatment and bring my computer to do reach-outs or put my orders in. It helped me maintain an important income, and gave me something else to focus on entirely during this challenging time.”

Fran feels eternally grateful to the members of Team Drive — including her twin sister Cat, friend Michelle, old college roommates, a few girls from her college basketball team, and so many more — for rallying behind her during life’s toughest moments. “The women I’ve met on this journey truly want to see me do well. Amy Morik, a leader on my team who earned her Lexus in July during my treatment course, waited to officially celebrate with the team until I could be there and be part of it. This is the type of person I would have never known if it weren’t for this business.”

Current goals

Fran is currently running for Premier V, and enjoying the continual growing process that Rodan + Fields brings. “Right now, I’m trying to really focus on sharing the opportunity and letting my life speak for what this business has given me. Business building isn’t something that happens overnight, and I’m enjoying every minute of it. My husband is 100% supportive and we always make it work, no matter when I decide to put in the hours. The thing is, R+F just doesn’t feel like work for me. It’s fun. It’s enjoyable. I work not because it’s something I have to do — it’s something I want to do.”

Looking forward, Fran hopes to continue making an impact with her R+F business. “When I became an Independent Consultant, I just wanted to be able to pay for daycare. I realized quite quickly that I set the bar too low. Looking for something bigger to do with my earnings, last year I made a donation to the Chris Herren Project. In November, one month after my double mastectomy, I wrote a check to support Living Beyond Breast Cancer. The next goal for me is to bring breast-health awareness, education, and prevention into our high school. I want to really put a face to breast cancer for our students and help them see the importance of early detection.”

Next up

Looking back on Fran’s hopeful journey so far, she wants everyone to know you can do anything you choose to do — and if the journey is challenging, those accomplishments end up being the most worth it. “I’ve always had a full life. I have a great prognosis and I have access to amazing doctors, but there’s always a chance that tomorrow is not guaranteed. I want to be positive and have fun and enjoy the journey. Today I feel great. I’m so looking forward to what’s next: living my life and taking advantage of any opportunity that that comes my way.”
