Heather Marrou – Holding on to Courage

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

Heather Marrou’s introduction to Rodan + Fields came when she was nine months pregnant and getting her bearings in a new city. Between being a full-time military spouse, moving all over the country and raising young children, she missed the chance to develop her professional self. But upon moving to yet another new town, Heather finally found the right career path by becoming an entrepreneur and starting her own skincare business.

A small dream

It began when in the midst of setting up her new home, Heather saw Hilary Trottier posting on Facebook about one of her incentive gifts from R+F. “I was intrigued by the gift, but what really spurred my interest was that both of us are army wives. I knew she had a successful career already and wondered why she was involved with R+F on top of everything else.” Heather messaged Hilary to learn more about the business, and when she found out her friend had the option to work from home with her kids (in any city they happened to move to), she was convinced that this was the plan for her.

Heather became an Independent Consultant in July 2013, and set her initial business goals with excitement and hope. “I thought if I could make a little extra money and take some of the burden off of my husband, I would feel better about what I was contributing to the family. I hoped I would like the skincare products, but I knew it would just be really fun to have the supplemental income.” Heather resolved to pursue that initial goal, and didn’t think any further.

Ever-changing goals

Starting a new business turned out to be more challenging than Heather anticipated, and brought out a different side of her personality. “It was scary and fun all at the same time. In the beginning I was worried about what people would think, so I hesitated to share my business. I’m so outgoing naturally, so this hesitation shocked my husband. Dale has always been my biggest fan and supporter, and even when I thought I couldn’t do this, he refused to let me quit. He encouraged me to grow out of this fear about what people think, because I was doing this for myself and I really believed in the opportunity.”

It wasn’t long before her confidence outgrew her fear. “I figured out pretty quickly that my initial goal could be easily attained, and that was such an inspiring realization. Watching my Upline leaders, I started to wonder what other amazing things I could do!” Heather dedicated at least 15 hours per week into her growing business and achieved her initial goal within six months. Now she dreams of further easing her family’s financial burden, putting down roots and regaining valuable time together.

Perks of entrepreneurship

Already, Heather and her family are experiencing the rewards of her hard work. “I started Rodan + Fields when my kids were pretty small, and I have always worked my hours around them. I love that I can be at school events, take them to dance practice, and be at all of their soccer games—things I wouldn’t be able to do if I had a 9-to-5 job.”

Heather also believes her Rodan + Fields business helps ease the burden of the typical military family life. “R+F has given me the supplemental income and flexibility to move around with the army while working at a reasonable pace. I worked this business through a year-long deployment in Saudi Arabia, and also through moving our family to Hawaii while Dale was deployed. Even now that he’s home, he works a lot of hours each day, without a set schedule—so we have always been thankful that R+F lets me be the constant for our children.”

Building strong bonds

Most rewarding of all, Heather realized she really likes the aspect of coaching and cheering on her team. “I love encouraging people, and that’s what really deepened my love for R+F. Members of Marrou Crew are from all areas of my life, and a majority of my team are also army wives. We understand the hindrances of being an underemployed military spouse, and that experience helps us thrive as Independent Consultants. Army spouses are some of the most resilient people I know. With R+F, as with the army, you just need to put your head down, move forward, and keep learning and growing.”

Members of Marrou Crew are always spreading their R+F excitement to new communities, mainly due to the transient nature of military life. “We currently have team members all over the US. When we move to a new place, our team is really good at showing a strong, united front as Rodan + Fields Independent Consultants—regardless of team affiliation. We know what it’s like to be the new person, so we’re are always there to support each other!”

Moving forward

When Heather earned her Lexus in October 2017, her biggest accomplishment to date, she reveled in the realization that each individual on her team also achieved something positive for their own family. “Personally, I want to keep growing into the leader that R+F has inspired me to be. My biggest passion is showing people that no matter what their fears are, they can accomplish incredible things. Because I believed in myself and this business, my family’s life has changed. Hold on to that little bit of courage, and you can do anything.”
