Heather Shields – A Lesson in Entrepreneurship

Posted by on Tuesday, December 27th, 2016

For eleven years, Heather Shields was a 7th-grade teacher in Maryland. The hours were long and the commute was an hour each way. She loved her job, but when she had her third child, she decided enough was enough. Every hour she spent in the car was an hour away from her family, and it was taking a toll on everyone involved. It was time, she says, to start prioritizing her family over her work. “It was impossible to be a good mom and a good teacher at the same time, so I quit teaching.” She and her husband decided to move back to their hometown of Pittsburgh, and Heather began her new career as a stay-at-home mom.

Being a Rodan + Fields Independent Consultant has allowed Heather Shields to spend more time with her family.

Learning a new skill

During her third pregnancy, Heather felt that the appearance of her skin had worsened. She tried several products without positive results, and had resigned herself to the fact that nothing would work. Then an old friend, Jenn DiVittorio, posted on Facebook about the Rodan + Fields REVERSE Regimen, and Heather gave it a shot. Within three weeks she saw dramatic results. “The appearance of my skin improved and I felt great about myself.” Jenn was delighted to see Heather so transformed by the product, and suggested that she spread the word by setting up her own R+F business.

Heather had never imagined running her own company, assuming that huge startup costs would make it a non-starter. But Jenn explained that the Rodan + Fields model removes those obstacles, and is a “ready-to-go” business, one that even offers a 30-day, money-back guarantee. Heather bought the business kit, but admits that she still had little to no intention of becoming a serious entrepreneur. However, an unforeseen event soon gave R+F a much more prominent role in her life.

In November of 2012, Heather was shocked to learn that her husband had lost his job. It was such a scary feeling—she felt helpless, and resolved to come up with a solution. She had kept her R+F business ticking for more than seven months, but now reassessed and realized that with a bit of hard work, she could potentially earn enough to pay their mortgage while her husband looked for work. And that’s exactly what she did. Once she concentrated her efforts, Heather experienced very quick success working 20 hours a week, earning her invitation to attend the Premier V trip to Napa a year later. There, she met other hard-working Consultants, and even the Doctors themselves. “It was an honor and an inspiration,” she says. She returned home from the trip with a renewed drive and focus.

Less stress, more success

Heather says that not having to work full-time anymore has made her a much better mom. She used to have to leave the house before her children got up to try to avoid upsetting them, and would then have to grade papers in the evening instead of spending quality time with them. Now, she works two hours in the morning while her youngest is in kindergarten and an hour and a half in the evening after the kids go to bed. Working 16-18 hours a week enables her to cover their yearly mortgage with just one month’s earnings from her Rodan + Fields business. In July 2015, she was one of the first Consultants in her area to earn a Lexus, and earlier this year she earned an R+F trip to Hawaii, all expenses paid.

For Heather Shields, being a Rodan + Fields Independent Consultant has meant more time with her three sons.

Thanks to Rodan + Fields, Heather never misses a minute with these three.

She has made lifelong friends with many R+F colleagues, and her close relationships have been paramount to her business. The support her team offers is incredible, she says. “We all strive to help each other succeed. We share information, and support and train each other. The camaraderie is just breathtaking!” Team Why currently has 700 members, and that number continues to grow. The name represents the multitude of reasons her members have for pursuing their R+F careers. Whether it’s to meet new people, enjoy the products, or to support their families, everyone has a “why” behind joining R+F, and Heather is intent on helping everyone on her team achieve those goals.

Reaping the rewards of hard work

Heather clearly revels in her newfound financial and personal freedom. Because of her business success, they are now debt free and able to take the family on vacation at least twice a year. Heather’s next milestone is RFx, which she hopes to achieve in the near future and become a speaker at next year’s R+F Convention. “I never intend on slowing down. I love every month that goes by.” For her, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing her team succeed. “My team is my ‘why’ now. I want to help them all get to where I am. Lives are changed every day with Rodan + Fields, and I want to spread that positive change further.”
