Jennifer Neufeld – Heeding a Good Friend’s Good Advice

Posted by on Thursday, July 27th, 2017

Our close friends often know us best, sometimes even better than we know ourselves. When Jennifer’s childhood friend Leisa Cutler came to visit her in British Columbia in the spring of 2014, she brought with her a very special gift. Living in Alabama, Leisa had recently retired from her career as an ICU nurse to concentrate on her thriving skincare business with Rodan + Fields®. She brought some of the products for Jennifer to try, as well as an idea—the chance to join her in business. Knowing that the brand was gearing up to expand into Canada, Leisa advised her friend to get involved and take full advantage of this golden opportunity.

A need for change

Despite the fact that Jennifer and her husband were running a busy dental practice together, building a new house, and had their third baby on the way, she followed her friend’s advice, as she was so impressed by the business concept, the products, and Leisa’s enthusiasm. “At the time I didn’t think I would work the business too much—we already had a lot on our plate.” She pre-enrolled anyway, to keep the option open when the launch came around.

At the end of that year, their baby was born, but within 12 hours of the birth their eldest was hospitalized with severe asthma. As a business owner, Jennifer had taken only eight weeks of maternity leave, and had to return to work with a new baby, a one-year-old, and a sick three-year-old at home. “It was a very stressful time. Our daughter’s asthma would flare up quickly, and we would end up in the hospital at least once a month. That meant a lot of rescheduled dental patients and appointments.” Jennifer then recognized that full-time work as a dentist could be problematic with their larger family, and that she needed something more flexible. “I realized I couldn’t keep working at that pace. I needed to still be able to earn money, but work when and where I chose, whether that be from the hospital or from home.” This experience reaffirmed that her decision to pre-enroll with R+F had been the right one.

Seizing the opportunity

In the two months leading up to the Canadian launch of Rodan + Fields in February 2015, Jennifer gave it her all. She spread the word far and wide, and started to prepare a team. And just as Leisa had predicted, she hit the ground running. Working her R+F business 5-10 hours per week, she  reached Level V in her first month as an Independent Consultant. She maintained that success, and was delighted to be invited on the all-expenses-paid Canada High Five trip to San Francisco later that year, with 25 of the top performing Canadian Level Vs. This experience sealed the deal for her, and reinforced her belief that she was involved in something really special.

Now, two-and-a-half years later, Jennifer is running for Elite V, and hoping to achieve her Lexus by the end of the summer. She’s also building a team in Australia, in the lead-up to the Australian launch. Her thriving skincare business takes up around 15 hours per week, and its success has allowed her to reduce her hours at the dental practice to two-and-a-half days per week—and she’s overjoyed. “Going part-time as a dentist has been so good for me and my family. It was a huge goal, and something I had been working toward for a very long time.”

A chance to unwind

These days, with their eldest daughter’s health much improved, and living in their dream home, the family is thoroughly enjoying their new lifestyle. Jennifer is able to be home with the children much more, and she revels in the financial and time freedom that her R+F business brings. She has also had the pleasure of attending several Rodan + Fields trips, to California, Arizona, and Mexico. And, while these trips can be challenging to fit into her schedule, she is always grateful for the opportunity to travel. “I don’t love leaving my family at home, but it works out well for all of us. They get to spend quality time with their dad and grandparents, and I return refreshed, rejuvenated, and a better mom and wife. Whereas in the past I would burn myself out, these trips allow me to ultimately give back more, both to my family and to my team.”

Sharing her newfound success with others has been a major reward for Jennifer. She delights in watching her team members thrive and achieve their goals. “It’s so exciting when someone on my team can choose not to return to work after maternity or paternity leave or take their family on a vacation they couldn’t have afforded before. It’s a great inspiration and motivation for me. I’m so thankful to Leisa for introducing me to this community of like-minded, enthusiastic entrepreneurs. I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”
