Jennifer Williams – Dreaming Even Bigger Beyond Fear

Jennifer Williams married her high school sweetheart, Tim Williams, and clearly envisioned their future together. They both earned multiple degrees and became nurse anesthetists, eventually moving back home to start their careers and create a family of their own. “We were living the American Dream and thought that’s how our life would be until we retired at the age of 65. We spent hours every day helping others have “sweet dreams” but we forgot to dream big for our family. My husband and I made great incomes and loved our careers, but we always wanted a Plan B. We just didn’t know what it was.”

After deciding against opening a franchise, Jennifer and Tim were introduced to Rodan + Fields by one of their colleagues at the surgery center. “We were skeptical by nature. I didn’t know anything about skincare; I slept with my makeup on at the age of 38 and had no business background either. We’re Type-A personalities, so we did our research. We learned that it was founded by dermatologists who had a 20-year history in skincare. For us, it was easy to attach our names to other medical professionals that were so highly respected. It was job security. There will always be acne, wrinkles, sun damage, and sensitive skin.”

Overcoming fears

At first, Jennifer wasn’t sure that sales would be right for her, given her extraordinarily shy personality. “My big fear was being a salesperson. I did anesthesia for 16 years, and that suited me so well because I hid behind the drapes, never spoke, and my patients didn’t remember me. I was afraid of personal failure, what others thought, and talking to them.” Still, by putting in an average of 10 to 15 hours a week on top of her full-time career, Jennifer quickly found a way to make her Rodan + Fields business work for her.

“I started to grow our business through social media just because I was shy about talking to others, and realized everybody was on their phones around me — whether it was on my lunch break, in the car pickup line, or at my children’s sporting events. I decided to use Facebook as free advertising. I only sold one product my first month. I told my husband that this business was not for me, but he reminded me of my potential: ‘You are not going to have overnight success. It takes time to start a business. This is a Plan B, and remember, it took us seven years to earn our nurse anesthetist careers. The time and investment will pay off.’” Jennifer knew if she was open daily for business, never gave up, and had bulletproof faith, she could start seeing success.

Family values

As their Rodan + Fields business gained momentum, Jennifer and Tim eventually decided to leave their anesthesia careers so that they could work R+F full time at home and spend more time with their children. “It’s all about time freedom. Now we actually spend our summers with our children instead of them being in daycare from 6 a.m. till 6 p.m. We can take them to their summer camps and have vacation time whenever we want. It’s the small things that mean the most — walking them to school, not missing class parties, field trips, and volunteering at school. They just grow up too fast and we don’t want to miss anything. My mother passed away when I was 21 years old, so I know how precious our time is with them.”

Family time is what it’s all about!

Jennifer is passionate about helping others at R+F achieve the same kind of success that she and Tim have. “Our main drive and passion is to help other people get to the same level so they can also have more family time. We want to help other families and our team members have the same experience.”

A personal touch

As a 2019 RFX Circle Achiever and earner of seven Lead the Way trips, Jennifer believes that a big part of her success has to do with making a real connection with others. “For me, it’s truly about helping others feel good and proud – whether it’s a Customer’s confidence in their skin or cheering on my team members’ successes. I was raised to write personal thank you notes and help others feel special. This is a big part of how we run our family business.”

She says there is really no other secret to her success, just a mighty work ethic. “If I can do it, anyone can. Skincare was not my passion but I quickly realized it was the vehicle for more family time and the ability to run my own business from wherever and whenever I wanted to.  Now we are dreaming big for our family and other families and looking to create a foundation to give back to others in the future!”
