Julia Rutledge – No Limits

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018

Julia Rutledge and her family moved to their dream home in California with ambitious goals. They planned to get settled on their 120 acres and ultimately to develop the land for use in a program or camp to benefit special needs children. One of Julia’s two beloved sons was born with Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic condition that involves insatiable appetite and delayed development in many areas of life. This made Julia quite passionate about advocating for other families like her own. Though Julia worked full-time as a physical therapist, the couple frequently lived month to month and felt the need for additional income.

“I needed to figure out a way to get extra income, so when my close friend Evonne Delaney mentioned Rodan + Fields, I decided to give it a try. Within two weeks of using the REVERSE Regimen, I noticed a huge difference in the appearance of my skin. I loved the opportunity, the products worked, and I realized this could be the way for me to meet my goals. I’ll forever be grateful that Yvonne got me into this business. I couldn’t wait to share my excitement with everyone I knew!”

New motivation

Julia started her skincare business in September 2015, fitting in at least 10 hours each week on top of her full-time job. Immediately, she found herself inspired and motivated. “R+F satisfied a need that I didn’t realize I had! I’m an ambitious person, but as a physical therapist, I felt like I already reached the level I wanted to achieve. The promotions, levels, and incentives involved in my business really helped me love the work even more. I also have to give credit to Molly Kahn because she took me under her wing when I wasn’t really sure what I was doing. With her mentorship, I was able to hit Level V within ten months!”

As she looked forward to incentive trips and team building opportunities, Julia was surprised to watch a new passion develop within herself. “I’m still running to reach my goals, but what’s been really fun is seeing my team members hit their goals and get to that next step. With R+F, I get to continue helping people from a physical standpoint, but I also get to help people gain confidence by feeling good in their skin and making big changes in their lives. That’s been really satisfying for me.”

Changing plans

Two years later, Julia found her business to be an even bigger blessing. “Life throws you curveballs. I never thought I needed that second income. But I was definitely grateful to have my business already in place when I became a single mom, went through a divorce, and had to sell my dream property. But I’m still planning on utilizing my R+F business to fulfill my dream for a special needs camp that dream just became a bit more flexible! I now have the opportunity to help a program that already exists expand to reach even more lives.”

When Julia enrolled 7-year-old Maddox in a weeklong camp for Prader-Willi syndrome, she found the perfect venue for bringing her dream to life. “This program makes such an impact, but a lot of people can’t afford to go. This year, I’m hoping to help provide a couple of scholarships so that other families can participate. I eventually want to help the camp expand so that more kids and adults can benefit from the program. As I continue to grow with my R+F business, I want to extend my impact in the Prader-Willi community even further. I want to continue helping families to see that with the right treatment and the right care their kids can do very well. That’s what I see for my future.”

Hand in hand

While she was determined to remain a strong leader for Team Determination, Julia was grateful to find herself surrounded by a loving and supportive community. “Between my R+F accountability partners, my family, and close friends, someone was checking on me every day. That gave me so much strength. Without them, I just don’t think I would have gotten through everything as well as I did.” Julia heard other inspiring stories from R+F leaders that also shored up her resolve. “I realized I could get through this. If these other amazingly strong women had already been there, I knew I’d be fine.”

The unexpected benefits of the R+F experience have become truly invaluable to Julia. “It’s incredible to me that we can all be so far away, and yet these complete strangers are now my really good friends. I’m now experiencing the same thing with my team in Australia. We all have a common goal, but at the same time, we form really close-knit friendships. I love the camaraderie we all have, and the memories we’ve made together will last a lifetime.”

Moving forward

Despite encountering difficult times in recent years, Julia is still inspired and determined to move forward. “I feel happier now than I ever have, and I know my life is going to continue getting better. My R+F journey has been so rewarding. Some months I donate my entire paycheck to help fund research, and hopefully, we’re getting that much closer to a cure. It really makes me feel good to give back to the community in a way I could never have before. I definitely don’t have any plans to stop.”

Julia is passionate about helping everyone benefit from the entrepreneurial experience. “I believe in the business so much, and I’ve loved being able to provide that opportunity to others. Just like I tell Maddox, there are no limits. He has a genetic condition that makes every day harder, but he doesn’t let that stop him. The same goes with anybody else! You can get whatever they want if you work hard and want it bad enough.”
