Karen Mae Hernandez – Learning to Make It

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018

In June 2013, Karen Mae Hernandez became an Independent Consultant and started her Rodan + Fields journey, dreaming of a free trip to Maui and uninterrupted days with her young family. Today, with the RFX title in hand, she and her team are running for the very promotion that first inspired her. “It’s really cool to see it becoming a reality now, because it really was a big life-changing moment for me! When I seized this opportunity I never turned back.”

Beginning strong

A dedicated mom and passionate MRI technologist, Karen thoroughly enjoyed her life of helping others. “I loved my career, my coworkers, and our great work environment. But as a mom to a two-year-old, I was working all hours of the day to pay for full-time daycare.” That, combined with hard days and long daily commutes, moved Karen to see that she needed to change her current situation. “I was working too much to provide for a family that I didn’t even see. So when Kristin Clark, a friend from college and work, shared her new business with me, I was intrigued to look into the opportunity and give it a chance.”

Karen faced several challenges in her early months with R+F, including outside skepticism and inner exhaustion. She worked her new business 25 hours a week on top of her other responsibilities and full-time position, connecting with people about R+F during her seemingly endless commute. “I was really dedicated to my business, of course, because I wanted to get out of my current situation and help my family. Putting in R+F hours became part of my daily routine.”

Meaningful rewards

Thanks to her hard work, Karen’s new business soon earned enough to cover her daughter’s daycare cost. But the perks didn’t stop there. Karen went on to earn her Lexus and RFX title, one of the first Consultants to do so in the Santa Clarita Valley. “The journey has been so exciting already! It did take me four years to hit RFX, but I wouldn’t change that for the world. Everybody’s timing is unique, and I’ve learned to embrace the journey. Seeing the lives of my friends and family start to change through R+F is what I love most and what kept me going even in the hard times.”

Karen finally left her full-time career on her 9th anniversary at the medical center, and though she does miss patient care, she’s excited about the benefits that her R+F business has provided for her and her family. “I’m so glad I took the chance. Leaving my job wasn’t such a huge loss because I still have something of my own and am providing financially for my family. This opportunity lets me be more present and have my personal and professional identity. This is mine, and I love feeling like I’m part of something bigger than myself.”

Family dreams

Karen’s R+F career has had a significant impact on her family life. “My R+F business has taken a lot of stress off of my husband Christian as well. When I left my full-time job, he no longer had to worry about leaving work early, picking up our kids, and missing deadlines. That was a big turning point for our family and has helped us tremendously. Getting closer to our personal goals as a family shows that infinite possibilities really do exist when you don’t give up.”

Today, Karen hopes to build financial security, inspire her children, and help her husband reduce his working hours. “This business has truly strengthened our marriage, and it’s been incredible to dream big together. R+F is a blessing that fell into my lap and completely changed our lives. I’ll never forget meeting the Doctors in person at the 2017 Convention and finally getting to thank them for creating such an amazing opportunity.”

Teaching others how to MAKE It

Working with Rodan + Fields gave Karen another rewarding way to help others that didn’t require long hours in the hospital. She loves inspiring members of Team MAKE It and helping each individual reach their goals. “R+F is definitely all about the team. Success is a group effort, and I absolutely love that. I want to help my friends that have joined me in business, and to be there for them as they strive for each new achievement. They are such kind people who really want to help others. It’s amazing to see our team name come to life.”

Like her team’s mascot, the golden pineapple, which brings the team joy and motivation, Karen is determined to light up the world around her. “I’m really no one special—I’m just one mom that didn’t quit. Since I’ve achieved such major goals, I want to be an inspiration to people who need R+F in their lives and everyone who’s already on my team. I’m passionate about sharing how this business has changed our lives. But the most rewarding thing is seeing the same thing happen for others. I encourage everyone to go for their dreams!”
