Karen Morgan – Chasing Her Dream

Posted by on Tuesday, March 13th, 2018

When Karen Morgan first learned about Rodan + Fields, she was feeling stuck in a higher education job that she never planned on taking. This was the most recent in a string of positions that she landed in to make ends meet. “I was really trying to figure out what I wanted to do for a living. I fell into this job just to pay the bills and to get away from the crazy schedule of radio work. Our department was very short-staffed and a lot of changes were taking place. While I loved the people I worked with, I was overworked and underpaid. I was promised promotions and title changes year after year that never came.” As the work stress continued to pile on, Karen started looking for a way out.

In addition to this uncomfortable situation, Karen and her husband Donald really wanted to start a family. “It was important to both of us that I would stay home with our future children. We spent years trying to figure out how we would make that happen. But we realized it wasn’t feasible for us because we couldn’t afford to completely give up my income. We didn’t want to put off having children any longer. I was trying to come to peace with the fact that I would just keep working and send my children to daycare, when I heard about Rodan + Fields.”

The unexpected conversation

The Morgans had just signed papers on their first home and were in the midst of time-intensive remodeling when Karen’s friend Jessica Edwards called. “Things were crazy at that time. So when I got on the phone with Jessica, I thought I would be a good friend, helping her out and giving her new business some referrals. I had no intention of starting a business myself. I didn’t need to add anything else to my plate!” However, after hearing more about R+F, Karen was intrigued by the idea of working a truly flexible schedule, where she might have the opportunity to make some additional income.

Karen shared their conversation with Donald later that night, and he did his own research. “The next morning, he got up and encouraged me to call Jessica. He wanted me to get involved immediately, and though I had already come to that conclusion myself, his financially-based opinion gave me added reassurance. In that moment, I knew I needed to let go of all the preconceived notions I had in my head and just go for it.” Karen hoped her new skincare business would allow her to reach her dreams, and was determined to not let the chance pass her by.

Making a change

Karen became an Independent Consultant in March 2013, feeling like she had nothing to lose and her entire future to gain. “When I started my business, I committed to working it for a full year. I knew I wasn’t going to build a successful business overnight. Donald and I agreed that I would work hard for a year and then see if I wanted to continue. But when my one-year anniversary came, we didn’t even have the conversation. We both knew I was not going to quit and that I was going to keep going.”

“I was loving it. I was growing a team. I loved the feedback I got from my Preferred Customers. They were falling in love with the R+F products, and so was I. Rodan + Fields has brought some of the greatest people into my life, many of whom I may have never met if I hadn’t joined this business. Now I’m lucky enough to call them some of my very best friends.”

During her first three years in business, Karen held on to her full-time job. “I saw the potential more and more as my business grew. Eventually, after having my first son, Cameron, I got a call from my full-time job requesting that I return to work early from maternity leave. I knew I did not want to come back, and realized that my Rodan + Fields business was the gift that would allow me to stay home. It was the best feeling in the world to tell them that I would be using the rest of my maternity leave, and that I would not be returning. A year later Donald and I welcomed our second son, Brayden. I finally had something that allowed me to stay home with my babies and not miss a moment. That’s something that we will forever be grateful for.”

Family goals

Over time, Karen’s goals for her family have shifted and grown. Donald has become an entrepreneur as well, and both parents are committed to gaining even more time and financial flexibility. “I want to give back to organizations we’re passionate about supporting. We also would like to purchase a bigger home now that our family has grown. And when my kids get older, I want them to see what their mom accomplished and be inspired. I want them to have the courage to take advantage of the opportunities they’re presented with, and to appreciate what my Rodan + Fields business has provided for our entire family.”

Karen believes her journey has only just begun. “My business is about more than just staying home with our kids. Now that I see the bigger vision of what my R+F business can do, I have no intentions of slowing down. There isn’t a single second I regret my decision to join this Company. That’s where we’re at right now, and it’s only getting better from here! We’re setting ourselves up for a life where we can have more control over our future.”

Seeing the big picture

The bigger meaning behind Karen’s business success is immaterial. “You really can’t put a price tag on the most important and meaningful things in life. For example, the personal growth that I’ve gotten from this business is something I didn’t expect but am now extremely thankful for. This opportunity has changed my life. And now, in return, I’m motivated to pay it forward and help change others’ lives as well. My business has become more focused on helping others, and I’m passionate about giving this gift to as many people as I can reach.”

Karen’s message to the world: don’t be afraid! “Don’t let fear hold you back from an opportunity that might be out of your norm. I never saw myself running my own business, but nothing changes if nothing changes. Too many people are hesitant to try something new. But some of the best things in life come from taking risks, and that’s exactly what my R+F business has taught me.”
