Katie Egan – Happy Gratitude

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Tuesday, March 6th, 2018

Katie Egan and her husband Eric were a mere two weeks away from welcoming their first child when they were presented with a challenging opportunity. “We jumped on the chance to move back to Chicago when my husband got promoted, but that also meant I didn’t have a job to return to after maternity leave. Nevertheless, it was definitely a blessing. I was excited to stay home and have all those great moments with our little one.” Katie loved devoting herself fully to motherhood, and they quickly had their second child. However, she also longed to be challenged in a different way.

“I am an achiever by nature. It felt strange to not have a paycheck with my name on it, for the first time since I was 15 years old. I didn’t have anything to shoot for, and I wasn’t working toward my dreams anymore. I felt like I was losing myself.” On top of all that, Katie’s husband became the sole provider for their family and now they were four people living on one paycheck in a more expensive market. “It was a lot on his shoulders all at once. I wanted to relieve some of his stress and pursue something for myself outside of being a mom and a wife. That’s where I was when I found Rodan + Fields.”

Hearing about R+F

After seeing a friend of a friend’s post on Facebook, Katie was instantly curious about starting her own skincare business. “When she reached out to me, I couldn’t wait to learn more. I rapidly jumped in and enrolled two days after our initial phone call.” Katie became an Independent Consultant in November 2011, and relied on her Upline leader, Alison Groder, for help in growing her new business.

Katie dedicated 8-12 hours per week, fitting it in after her kids went to bed. Her first goal was to start making payments on her ideal family vehicle. “I was driving a very old sedan at the time with two little bitties in it, and I really wanted to get a minivan, the mom-mobile of choice! I always laugh looking back, but that was definitely my dream car.” Soon, Katie had her new keys in hand and was moving on to even bigger goals.

Running for Lexus

Over the next couple of years, the Egan family grew to include four little ones and TeamUP gained many new faces. Their enthusiasm was Katie’s greatest source of excitement. “When my Sponsor ran for Lexus, she set the vision of what was possible for the rest of us. I loved seeing that effect in my own team. One of the greatest things was finding business partners who shared in the R+F vision and really saw where we were going.” As she ran for her own goals, Katie found herself even more interested in the progress of her team members. “I love seeing other people succeed. It’s almost a mama hen thing! I get more excited about seeing a member of our team hit a goal than achieving it myself, as crazy as that sounds!”

When she eventually became a Premier V Lexus Achiever herself, Katie gave the luxury car experience to her husband. “I still really wanted to drive my minivan! My husband says he feels like the luckiest guy in the world anyway, and really loves the added bonus of getting to drive our Lexus. The truth is, it’s not about the car for me. This incredible perk from Rodan + Fields was validation that I could build my own business. My R+F business allowed me to reach success while still putting my family first.”

A welcoming community

Katie is currently running for Elite and RFX, and loves thinking about what these titles mean for those in her Downline. “Titles are wonderful and fun, but I just love seeing my team succeed. I get a lot of joy out of their moments of empowerment and enlightenment, and helping them realize they’re capable of more than they thought possible. I can never give enough credit to my team. There is nothing that we do in this business by ourselves! This journey has allowed me to see that we are all so much more capable than we think we are. We can affect so many more lives than we realize.”

Indeed, Katie found much more than colleagues when she joined the Rodan + Fields community. “We have such a positive, loving, and collaborative group of ‘no drama mamas’! Our team is made up of incredible women and men, and it has been really neat to see them flourish and blossom. They have wonderful hearts. I’ve met some incredible people through this business that I feel blessed to call friends. I just can’t say enough about those that surround me in Rodan + Fields.”

Gratitude and happiness

Katie’s business has also helped develop her internal sense of confidence and accomplishment. “While I had never really gone out of my way to work on myself outside of athletics or academia, I now find myself craving personal development. I’m learning how to be a better mom, how to be a great wife, and how to go out in the world and make a difference. I just can’t give my business enough credit for helping me come into my own. I hope to continue to pay that forward.”

Looking into the future, Katie hopes that her story will inspire others to invest in themselves and to respond to their successes with gratitude. “I don’t know that there’s anything special about my story, and maybe that in itself is an important message. Everything starts and ends with gratitude, and I’m so grateful to have been blessed in more ways than I could ever count. To my beloved family, I can’t say thank you enough. I don’t ever want to say that this work is easy, because it’s not. But by putting one foot in front of the other and doing a little bit each day, you know that it can pay off down the road in a big way for yourself and your family.”

Tell Me More…

Have there been any especially significant people in your R+F journey? My parents instilled my work ethic and determination in me. My husband, Eric, really inspired me to take worthwhile risks on myself. Within R+F, I have so much gratitude for my team, mentors and partners, including Alison Groder, Kristin Korn, and Beth Kelly.

What’s your biggest quirk? We LOVE being the crazy camping family.

What is the best business advice you were given? I was told early in my journey to write down a vision/mission statement for my business. It’s kept me focused on what I feel is most important.

Where do you draw your inspiration from in life? Faith and family are always first for me. I love sports analogies though, so my team might claim I am most inspired by athletics!

I’m so thankful that I gave R+F a try, both for personal use and soon after as consultant. I don’t consider myself a “salesperson”. I love our products and therefore love sharing my “find” with others. It’s a win for me and my customers as well! Thanks for all your help and support, Katie.

  3. Katie is a one of a kind lady selfless and caring. She is always an encourager and her smile and personality say so much about her.
