Katie Gibson – Doing it for the Kids

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Thursday, May 4th, 2017

For many, having kids is a life-changing event, not only in the practical sense, and it can also be a catalyst that drastically alters our focus and priorities.

When Katie Gibson had children, it gave her the motivation to explore something new, something she had never envisioned for herself. That willingness to accept a new challenge and leave her comfort zone ultimately helped to revolutionize her career and gave her the freedom to dictate her own future.

Seizing a new opportunity during her maternity leave

Working as a full-time speech language pathologist, Katie’s plate was full—she was the mother to an 18-month-old child, with another baby on the way.  However, Katie recalled that she had been restless during her maternity leave with her first child. Now expecting a second child, she decided to use the opportunity to try something new. “I’m a naturally productive person. I always need to be doing something,” she says, adding, “I felt like my maternity leave would be the perfect time to start a new business, otherwise I would just be sitting around all day.”

Katie was introduced to Rodan + Fields by an old high school friend and she was immediately impressed by the caliber of people who joined the company as Independent Consultants. She was also blown away by the credibility and acumen of the Company and its founders. “I could see this was a very smart company and I wanted in right away. I had a hunch that this was going to be huge.” So in July 2013, at the start of her maternity leave, she signed up as an R+F Independent Consultant.

Surpassing her expectations in some wonderful ways

Katie soon realized that her R+F business was going to have an impact that far surpassed her expectations. “I started to fall in love with the products. I began sharing them with people and within the first three months, my belief in the business just grew by leaps and bounds,” she says. In that time, she also identified her driving force; her “why.”  Katie endeavored to place herself in a position where she could leave her full-time job. Having a new baby also drove her to succeed, as she envisioned becoming a more present parent. “When you are holding your baby in your arms, it’s incredibly motivating.” Returning to work after her first maternity leave had been very tough, but now she had identified a possible way to avoid that the second time around.

Through her R+F business, Katie discovered a new side of herself. She began to nurture the emerging entrepreneur that dwelled within. She found it incredibly liberating to serve as her own boss, making her own schedule and establishing her own deadlines. This experience also shed a light on what had been missing in her former career. Working her Rodan + Fields business 10 to 15 hours per week, Katie matched her old salary within 15 months. Within two years, she was an Elite V Consultant, and had earned a Lexus. Just six months later, in December 2015, she made the decision to retire from her full-time career so she could focus on R+F. “My business had really taken off. I had doubled my old salary and achieved the freedom I had been looking for,” she says with pride.

Discovering a new self and a new sense of freedom

Today, Katie has increased the amount of time she spends growing her business, working between 15 and 20 hours per week. Her work is scheduled around her life, rather than the other way around. “I finally have the time and the financial freedom to fit in all the things I like to do. I have time to exercise and take care of me, to have lunch with friends, and time where I can simply focus on my kids. My husband and I now have the freedom to take more vacations with the family and we have the ability to give more.”

Personal development has also been a significant aspect of her newfound career. For someone who had never really expressed a serious interest in business, Katie has really thrived as an entrepreneur. She has found herself surprised by her own abilities, perseverance and grit. “It revealed a side of me I didn’t know I had. You really recognize how driven you are when you are responsible for driving yourself.”  Before becoming a businesswoman, she never fully appreciated the extent of her skills and talents. She is now incredibly proud of her achievements, adding, “You start to realize that we are all held back by our own fear, insecurities and lack of confidence. It is only when you step outside your comfort zone that you truly see what you are capable of achieving.”

The greatest gift

When asked about the most significant reward associated with running a successful Rodan + Fields business, Katie indicated that she most appreciates the additional time that she can spend with her family. “The most important thing that my R+F business has given me is an opportunity to be involved in the early years of my children’s lives.”

She once feared that she would miss those formative years, believing that her career would not allow her to be at home with Sam, who is now five, and her three-year-old daughter, Caroline. But now that worry has been lifted; she has earned her freedom and in the process, she has achieved her own work-life balance.
