Kristin Gummer – A Reason to Redefine

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Tuesday, August 21st, 2018

As 2016 drew to a close, Kristin Gummer wanted to make a career change. “I’m a single mom, I worked a government job, and I felt so frustrated that I was only ever going to make a certain amount of money because there were only so many hours in the day. I never thought I would be a single mom at 50, living paycheck to paycheck.” Kristin reached out to Kellye Ryan, a family friend, to ask about the skincare business she had started. “I signed on as a Rodan + Fields Independent Consultant without ever having tried an R+F product. From the very beginning, I just got it.”

Starting strong

By putting in 10-15 hours per week into her new Rodan + Fields business, Kristin reached Level V within five months. “At the time, I didn’t understand that that level of growth might be hard to sustain. But from the very beginning, I really liked that I could work as hard as I wanted to which is so different from a traditional job. The opportunity with R+F is so amazing.”

Kristin was thrilled to have found success so soon — especially since she had bigger responsibilities to keep in mind. “Beyond the financial aspects, my Why was clear from the very beginning. My younger daughter, Mackenzie, is profoundly disabled and lives with lennox-gastaut syndrome, the rarest form of epilepsy. She currently lives in a licensed children’s medical home and is in a wheelchair, has a feeding tube, and has never spoken a word. When I joined Rodan + Fields, the state was in the process of moving her and there was all this uncertainty about where she was going to go and who was going to care for her. I knew if I had more financial freedom, I could be part of that solution.”

Life’s ups and downs

Unfortunately, while Kristin was occupied with thoughts of her daughter’s stability, her own circumstances demanded her attention. “At the time, I had a very stable government job with health benefits and a pension, and Mackenzie’s world was really up in the air. The irony is, all the fears and worries I had for her never came to fruition. Instead, over the course of 18 months, I lost my job, moved to a new home, and went through major surgery. My living situation changed. My job changed. My own health changed. And my Why for sure has shifted because my own situation became so drastically different.”

After her personal life was completely shaken up, Kristin discovered her Why felt even stronger than when she started her R+F business. “A year and a half ago, if you’d told me what was going to unfold, I would have told you it wasn’t possible. Now I know that I can only take care of my daughter as well as I’m taking care of myself. As I’m starting over a bit with a new job and a new home, I love that I’ve always had support from my Rodan + Fields business. It’s certainly been a motivator for me as I’m moving forward.”

Her solid foundation

Kristin’s Rodan + Fields business also endured significant challenges during this time, but Kristin is as determined as ever to make entrepreneurship work. “Being new to the business when everything changed, I think I just lost my footing. I definitely lost some momentum, but I’m grateful I had the bones of my business in place when these things happened. This past year has involved redefining who I am, what I’m about, why I’m here, and what I want to do with my business and my life.”

“It’s funny, honestly, because when I think about Rodan + Fields I realize it’s not even about skincare. I love the products and the science behind them, but that’s just the vehicle. Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields created a channel that empowers people to build a business that can help pay for skincare, inspire you to travel the world, or add to your kid’s college fund. It doesn’t matter what your motivation is, and that’s the beauty of Rodan + Fields. We all use the same means to get there.”

Achieving a new focus

Over time, Kristin rebuilt her Level V business and is now focused on making deeper connections with members of Team Crown G. “That was the name of our family ranch, and it now stands for the many traits of the team I strive to build with people who are grateful, generous, gracious, and go-getters! Right now I’m really embracing the idea that this business is about seeing people who are doing the work, locking arms, and matching efforts. I’m having conversations with every single person on my team and asking what they want from this opportunity. If I know what people are working for, I know how to help them get there. I think that’s really important.”

Kristin believes a more personalized approach to business building will help bring her other dreams into reality. “Moving into the future I really understand the value and the importance of self-care. I’m working on becoming a certified massage therapist and building a practice that is both massage therapy and skincare. That’s the goal: being able to help people take care of themselves, whether it’s their skin, their body, or their career. I’d also love the opportunity to train on the DAILYXperience platform. It’s another chance to empower other women to take advantage of this opportunity and whatever that means for them.”

Overall gratitude

Kristin’s journey so far has included terrific highs and difficult lows, but she is proud of where these experiences have brought her. “I’m really grateful for this opportunity and for the timing. I’m grateful that even when life got in the way, my Rodan + Fields business was still here for me. I’m now considering a job offer on the east coast, and I love that if I accept, I can take my R+F business with me. Through programs like Level Up I’ve grown close with people who I would never have met otherwise — including my skin sisters Christy Taylor, Joy Dearth, Katie Headrick, and Molly Granlund. As our Company grows globally, I’m taking a second to really look at what this opportunity is, what it affords me and my two daughters, and what the future holds. I see that the sky’s the limit with Rodan + Fields, and that is awesome.”
