Laine Santamaria – Inspiring a Life Worth Living

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Friday, September 19th, 2014

At the age of twelve, after being introduced to her mother’s work caring for children with cancer, Laine Santamaria knew she wanted to work in pediatric oncology. Committed to making a career for herself in the field she was passionate about, Laine went to medical school and worked her way to her dream job. In 2008 Laine lost her mother to cancer. While dealing with this tragedy, she knew she wanted to carry on the tradition her mother had started, hosting an annual holiday party at a non-profit organization that sponsors experiences for children with life-threatening illnesses. Unsure of how exactly she would be able to raise the money needed, Laine vowed that she would find a way to carry on her mother’s legacy, as a tribute to her, and live a life dedicated to inspiring change.

Laine is grateful that her business has enabled her to carry on her mother’s legacy of giving back.

After the birth of her first son in 2010, Laine was still working full time at the hospital, which included nights, weekends, and holidays. “I felt like I was missing so much of his life and, even though I had this amazing opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many other kids, it felt backwards to me.”

Laine struggled with the fact that she was away from her family so much, but didn’t think she had many other options, until a friend introduced her to Rodan + Fields® in May of 2013. Intrigued by the business opportunity, Laine consulted her husband and brother. “They are my business go-to people and I trust their opinions. I figured they would tell me it was a crazy idea and wonder why I was considering this route when I had worked my whole life to get into pediatric oncology.”

Laine was shocked when they told her the Company had a great business model and that they supported her following up on this new opportunity. She jumped in, confident that the only way she could lose was if she didn’t try. “I felt that the opportunity could be the way for me to give back in a capacity I would never have dreamed of and also would allow me to cut back my hours at work in order to be home more.”

Within six months of becoming an Independent Consultant, Laine reached Level V and since February of this year has been able to stay home full time. After the birth of her second child in August, Laine was relieved to be with her kids without any pressure to go back to work.

This past summer Laine achieved her goal. Through personal business donations and various fundraising events, she raised $125,000 and was able to dedicate a room at the non-profit in memory of her mother. “It was the biggest joy. Never in a million years would I have pictured being where I am now. I saw the potential in the beginning, but I didn’t think I would get to where I am so soon. I am amazed every day at how this business can be anything you want it to be.”

Laine loves that

Laine loves that her business allows her to be home with her children.

Her accomplishments have shown her that she needs to dream bigger. “I reached the goal I thought would take at least ten years to achieve, but I did it in under a year by simply molding my business into my everyday life. It’s incredible that actually planning the charity event is already a reality.”

Extremely proud of her education, Laine made a tough decision. “It was difficult for me to transition away from doing what I’d thought I was meant to do my whole life. However, in suddenly having this new vision, I found that a completely unintended Plan B can become the most amazing Plan A. I couldn’t have dreamed up the life I’m living right now.”

Laine realized that through giving back in other ways she is still able to fulfill her desire to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer, without sacrificing time with her family. “Losing my mom was a big wake up call. She was my very best friend and losing her forced me to take a step back and evaluate my perspective on things. By making the most of our time, we can inspire the will to keep going.”

Dedicated to making a difference, Laine firmly believes that one person can have a profound impact. “If you believe with your whole heart in whatever vision you have, it can become a reality. Never doubt yourself or your dream. You can make it happen if you have the desire to work hard enough.”

Laine cherishes every moment with the ones she loves.

Laine loves that her business challenges her on an intellectual and personal level. “When I say I’m going to do something, I go all the way with it and commit 150 percent. Backing out is not an option. This opportunity has made me open to new opportunities and wonderful friendships that I would never have had the chance to experience otherwise.”

Passionate about igniting change and inspiring others to be their best and make the most of their opportunities, Laine works every day to live in a way that reflects her calling to give back. “You never know what your life is going to look like, but if you want it to look differently, change it. It takes courage, but in the end you have to do what you feel is right because you only get to do this life once.”
