Laura Chenoweth – A Blossoming New Business

Looking for a creative outlet to supplement her full-time career as an office manager, Laura Chenoweth set up her own business as a wedding florist. She enjoyed the work, and it gave her an additional income for part of the year. But in the summer months her business bloomed, and in the winter it died down—a pattern that began to frustrate Laura. “During the summer I was overloaded with work, putting in hours all over. But then in the winter it was dead, and I would lose that income.”

Being a one-woman-show also meant that she had to fulfill every role herself. “I had to wear all the hats—marketer, designer, salesperson, customer service representative, accountant—it was hard work.” Overall, the business was not ideal, especially when three years ago, she and her husband, Tyler, had a daughter. They had been trying for a baby for five years, and in the end had been successful with the help of expensive fertility treatments. This made the prospect of going back to work after four months’ maternity leave, and then being busy all summer, all the more heart-wrenching for Laura. “The many years of disappointment meant that when we eventually had our daughter she was particularly precious to us, and I hated having to go back to work. So I set my sights on figuring out how to become a full-time stay-at-home mom.”

Opportunity awaits

At exactly that time, Laura’s good friend Krii Black introduced her to the idea of becoming an Independent Consultant with Rodan + Fields. “I wasn’t really looking for an extra job, but I had only gone back to work part-time, and I wanted something that I could do from home, so I decided to give it a try.” Laura signed up in November of 2014, starting her second entrepreneurial enterprise. From the get-go, she realized it was very different from her experience as a florist.

The ease with which she was able to set up her new Rodan + Fields business delighted Laura. “R+F was perfectly packaged for me. It included all the tools, marketing materials and guidelines I needed to set up—all I had to do was put in the work.” She fit the hours in between her office manager position and looking after her daughter, and by just putting in around 5 hours per week, she began to see her business grow. So much so that after less than a year, Laura decided to leave her office job and concentrate on her R+F work. She continued to work her florist business for a couple of summers, but eventually the flexibility of R+F enabled her to put that business on hold last year. Now Laura is a full-time stay-at-home mom, and the couple gave birth to their second child, a boy, last year.

Coming up roses

Laura can’t believe the change in her schedule after a few short years. With her husband often working 24-hour shifts as a firefighter, the couple used to sometimes hardly see each other for days at a time. “These days, I make my own hours. I can take R+F everywhere with me. When we go on a trip together, or while my daughter is in preschool, I can take out my phone and work. I couldn’t do that with my wedding business.” She now dedicates around 10 hours per week to her Rodan + Fields work, and the rest to her family. “R+F has been such a dream come true for us, because it has allowed me to be at home with my children. When we had our son, I was able to work the whole way through the pregnancy seamlessly.”

Laura recently reached Premier V, and is aiming to achieve her Lexus by next summer. She also earned her first Incentive Trip this fall, joining other Premier V Consultants in Napa in November. The Rodan + Fields community has been a welcome change from her previous life as a solitary businesswoman, and Laura loves the daily interaction with her team and partners all over the country. “It fulfills another part of me that I never realized was missing. I’m in business for myself but not by myself.”

The sense of community that comes with her R+F business is a world apart from her previous careers. “No other company I know of has a support network like this. Before, I felt like I was on my own. Now I’m part of a huge group of other like-minded entrepreneurs, all working together to help each other succeed. It’s so cool to be a part of something so powerful.”
