Laura Meijer – An Avenue For Growth

Posted by on Friday, June 6th, 2014

Who are you? And what defines you as a person? Sometimes we use our careers as a way to label ourselves, using terms like doctor, teacher, or engineer. Maybe it’s a family name that gives us a sense of belonging or a title such as wife or mother within our family. Our identities are important not only because it’s how others see us, but because it’s how we see ourselves. When we are overwhelmed with responsibilities and commitments to others, our identity can get lost or confused. Laura Meijer felt the recognition as ‘local quad mom’ was overpowering her sense of self. Wanting to be more, she found an outlet that allowed her personality and strengths to shine through in ways she’d wanted to utilize before, but hadn’t been given the opportunity to do so.

Laura's R+F business has provided her an outlet to utilize her talents and explore her passions.

“It’s remarkable that someone like me who has four little kids can be an entrepreneur and have a successful business without any previous experience. I just jumped in and started. It’s still shocking to me that I can keep the things that are close to my heart at the front of my priorities with this opportunity. It doesn’t matter who you are; truly anyone can do it and it can change your life.” Previously a first grade teacher before the birth of her quadruplets, Laura never expected she would start her own business. But, when she discovered there was an incredible opportunity that would allow her to keep family as the top priority, she couldn’t resist trying.

Laura was hoping to find herself again, feeling as though her identity had changed quite a bit since being home with her kids for so long. She wanted to do something she could be proud of, but she wasn’t looking for another job. One of her best friends had experienced success with her own Rodan + Fields® business, so Laura decided to inquire about the opportunity, seeing it more as a way to grow than as a potential career. She wondered, at first, if someone as busy as she was could find success as an Independent Consultant and she quickly found her answer, becoming an RFx Circle Achiever by her ninth month. “It was really exciting for me and it felt so good to do something for myself and that helps others too. Before R+F, it started to feel like I didn’t have something that was for me, outside of my role as wife and mother. I wanted to do more and it’s been so humbling to know that I am now a part of a business that is changing my life, but also has the potential to change the lives of so many others. It’s overwhelming to know that I can have a successful career while working from home with the freedom I’ve always desired.”

As the mother of four five year olds, time management is an important skill to master. Laura has become extremely creative about fitting her R+F business into her life and multitasking throughout her days. This type of flexibility allows her to adjust to her family’s schedule and continually revisit how she accomplishes her goals most effectively while continuing to grow her business. “I love that I can show my kids that success doesn’t mean having to head downtown five days a week. I can provide for my family and give to charities that are important to my husband and me all because I chose to take a leap into this opportunity. I’m really proud that I’ve been able to maintain my role as mother and it’s really neat to be just as present and active as I was before.”

Laura also loves seeing her teammates’ achieve success as well. “It’s incredible to be a part of such a great thing. Whether it’s the opportunity to get out of debt or quit a stressful job, seeing people achieve their ‘why’ is so rewarding. This opportunity can be the avenue to get from point A to point B. No matter what is going on in life, if someone is looking to do something bigger, to save more, find confidence, or even take their family on a great vacation, this could be that avenue to reach those dreams. It doesn’t take a specific person to do that, it just takes the decision to try.”

Laura’s business has given her the opportunity to develop new skills as well, providing the chance to train and motivate others to expand their own businesses. “I love that I get to help people be the best they can be and do the best they can do. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction and pride because seeing others succeed and be confident is one of my favorite things about my business. It’s so special to see people gain a new sense of self; it’s as if their aura changes.”

Laura is also grateful that she can use some of her income to support charities, such as the children’s hospital, that are close to her heart. “My success isn’t for me personally; it’s not about the money or trips. The success is the growth, what my team has accomplished, and enjoying being a part of how others are changing their own lives. This opportunity happened to be a perfect fit for me and it has provided luxuries that I wasn’t even looking for. I have so much belief in this business and the products that I keep telling people about it because I feel like it would be a disservice not to.”

Laura’s personal growth and achievements inspire her to share her story with others, hoping they can experience the happiness and refreshed sense of identity she has found in being so much more than just a mother. “People fall into a trap of ‘I can’t’ or they think it works for others but won’t work for them, and that’s simply not true. This can work for anyone and there is no reason not to see if this is the something that can change your life too. I’m not some huge corporate executive; I’m a mom who is trying to do the best I can and raise my kids. Yet, I’m able to do this and be an example at the same time.”
