Lesley Nizza – The Path to Recognition and Fulfillment

Posted by on Tuesday, April 18th, 2017

It stands to reason that when a person feels like her or his efforts are going unnoticed, they may soon become fed up and enthusiasm might wane. With two master’s degrees and nine years of special education teaching experience under her belt, Lesley Nizza was a highly competent and valuable employee. But unfortunately, she was not getting the recognition that made her hard work seem worthwhile. She was confident of her abilities and her worth, she just needed to find the setting in which these attributes would be fully appreciated.

Setting out on the path to happiness

Five years ago, after returning to work from her unpaid maternity leave, Lesley discovered that her situation had changed. Her workload had increased and become more challenging, and she quickly began to feel overwhelmed and underqualified to deal with it. When she found out that she would also have to take a pay cut, she knew it was time for change. “Enough was enough. It was just one thing after another, and I just wanted to be at home with my baby.” She felt overworked and underappreciated, “I realized that I was unhappy, and it was flowing over into other areas of my life. It felt like everything was out of my control, like I was powerless.” And so, at that moment she resolved to find a way out.

For a few months Lesley had been following the successes of her college roommate and sorority sister, Sarah LeBlanc. She was also a teacher, but had recently started her own Rodan + Fields skincare business, and Lesley was pleased to see how successful and happy she was. So, despite some initial uncertainty regarding her own abilities as an entrepreneur, she reached out to ask Sarah about the business model. “To begin with I thought ‘I have no business working in skincare,’ but I knew I was unhappy where I was, and that the worst that could happen would be that I would have to return the business kit, so I dove right in.”

A world of difference

Lesley’s initial apprehension was partly from fear of letting go of her career as a teacher. After studying so hard and investing so many years into building that career, she understandably did not want to just give up on it. However, as soon as she began her new business as an Independent Consultant in October of 2013, she realized she had nothing to be worried about. “The fact is, I am able to use my teaching experience and skill set to its full potential in this business. I teach, guide, and empower people every day now, and one of the most rewarding parts of my R+F business is training others how to be successful.”

Lesley very quickly realized that her new venture could help her on her path to happiness, “Once I saw the opportunities the business could offer, I went from thinking, ‘Let’s give this a shot’ to ‘This is my way out!’” She excelled, hitting Level V and matching her teacher’s salary within just four months. She continued to teach full-time, working her R+F business 10-15 hours a week. With R+F, she began to feel a gratitude that had been missing for so long. Just nine months after starting her Rodan + Fields business, Lesley earned her Lexus and an all-expense-paid trip to Maui. These things would have been unimaginable to her before, and now, suddenly, her hard work was being rewarded. The biggest reward, however, was still to come, when after two years with R+F she reached another turning point.

The gift of family

In June of 2015, Lesley had her second child, a daughter. This time, however, she didn’t have to worry about her unpaid maternity leave, as she had just achieved RFX Circle, and decided it was time to leave the classroom. This was a huge relief and gave Lesley a freedom she sought for years. “I’m able to be at home for my daughter, and I don’t have to miss out on those priceless moments. I didn’t have that time with my son, but I’m making up for it now!”

These days, Lesley works her R+F business from home about thirty hours a week, alongside her now Power Partner and fellow RFX Circle Achiever Sarah LeBlanc. The two have supported each other along the journey from unfulfilled teachers to highly successful businesswomen, and they now both lead their own teams of Independent Consultants. “I went from powerless to powerful. I am now truly in the driver’s seat, I can control when, how, and where I work my business. I can now provide my family with more than I would ever have been able to do with my teaching career, and I feel appreciated and rewarded every single day.”
