Melanie Fields – Discovering a New Discipline

Posted by on Thursday, June 15th, 2017

After investing in years of education and then more in developing a fulfilling and fruitful career, it may seem daunting to set off in a new direction and leave it all behind. But in today’s world, adaptability is key. Melanie Fields had spent her whole adult life both educating herself and others, and loved her niche in the academic world. But she eventually realized that in order to provide the ideal lifestyle for herself and her family, she would have to learn to use her considerable talents in a different context.

Out with the old

After obtaining two master’s degrees, one in school counseling and the other in child development, Melanie taught and counseled children of all ages, from kindergarten to high school. Taking her career to the next level, she then achieved her doctorate in educational psychology and became a college professor, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. “I absolutely loved the world of higher education. After getting my Ph.D., I thought I would stay in that career until I retired.” However, after she had her two daughters, Melanie began to realize that her working hours were incompatible with motherhood. Teaching mainly graduate courses, she regularly had to work evenings and weekends. So when her eldest started kindergarten, she decided it was time to step back from her career to focus on being a more present parent.

Melanie's Why

Melanie’s Why

Initially she planned to take a year off, and then find work with more suitable hours at a local community college. But one year turned into two, and she fully embraced her new role as a stay-at-home mom. “I dove into it, I became a homeroom mom and a troop leader.” It was during this time her cousin told her about an opportunity; the idea of setting up a skincare business with Rodan + Fields. At the time, Melanie says, she had too much on her plate. She and her husband had recently sold their house and were in the process of building a new one, so the idea of starting a new business at the same time didn’t seem feasible. But eight months later, after the dust had settled, she decided to take a closer look at the details and give it a try.

Passing on valuable lessons

Melanie admits that when she started her business in March 2012, she really didn’t see its full potential. “To begin with, I was simply hoping to get a discount on the products, which I loved, and maybe make a bit of cash on the side.” Little did she know that five years later she would be an RFX Circle Achiever, and a highly successful businessperson. Just less than a year after signing up, she was invited to Convention in Dallas and says it was a major turning point in her journey. She was blown away by the people she met, and the positivity and success she encountered there. “I looked around and realized that this new venture was going be the vehicle for change in my life. Everything just clicked.” She left Convention with a renewed belief and ambition. In April of 2013 (just two months later), Melanie reached Level V, working 15-20 hours per week, and her business has continued to grow from there.

Melanie is delighted to say that her new career has given her the freedom to travel, her family’s ultimate passion. “We want to show our kids everything we can while we can, to build special memories as a family while the girls are young.” She has been able to treat both daughters to surprise vacations, in order to have some mom-and-daughter quality one-on-one time. Last year she took her youngest to New York, and this spring she took her eldest to California. “The icing on the cake is that these trips are all paid for with my R+F earnings,” she exclaims with pride. Another welcome perk is the ability to combine her R+F business trips with family vacations. This summer the whole family is jetting off to Australia for a holiday in anticipation of the Australian R+F launch, a trip she is very excited about.

Making the most of her hard-earned talents

“If someone had told me when I was a professor that five years down the line I would be running my own skincare business, I would have laughed at them. It never even entered my sphere,” Melanie remarks. But now, she says, she has more job satisfaction than ever before. She proudly puts her years of experience to good use in developing and growing her ever-increasing team of Consultants. “I would have never thought that all that my counseling and teaching experience would play such an important role in my R+F work, but what I do now is share, educate, and build people up. All the skills I learned in my previous career, I use daily in my R+F business.”
