Melanie Wright – Finding Peace

When Melanie Wright was introduced to Rodan + Fields, she and her family were in the midst of a challenging transition. Melanie’s husband, Jared, decided to make a major career change and go back to school to study dentistry. “Our family moved to Houston while he went to dental school, and we actually didn’t have any income for four years. We lived on maxed-out student loans and totally depleted our savings, going from no debt to a lot of debt in a very short period of time. When Rodan + Fields was introduced to me, we were going into his last year of dental school with five kids. It was a very stressful, very busy, and very overwhelming time in our lives.”

Discovering a new path

When a lifelong friend invited her to a Rodan + Fields business presentation in 2012, Melanie immediately saw the value of partnering with Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. She saw this as a chance to make things easier on her family during such a financially stressful time. “The brand recognition was huge for me. I loved that with R+F you didn’t have to do parties, there was no stocking of inventory and I’d be building a fully virtual business. I really saw where the Company was and where it was going to be. I saw it as a vehicle for me to make big changes in my life.”

Without knowing anything about retinol or peptides, Melanie jumped into business as an Independent Consultant the very next day. “From the very beginning, I didn’t think small. I saw the big picture. My Sponsor set a good example, encouraging me to get myself out there and share the amazing products and business with at least five new Customers and Consultants in my first month. In the beginning that was my goal.” Everyone’s journey varies, but by putting around 20 hours per week into her R+F business, Melanie was able to hit Level II in her first month in business, Level III one month later, and Level V in July 2013.

The challenge of change

Meanwhile, the Wright family was still working through their own obstacles. Jared graduated from dental school, worked a few associate positions in Houston, and then the family moved to San Antonio with the goal of starting a dental practice. “My husband still commuted to Houston for work until the practice opened, so I was essentially handling the workload for the new practice and being a single mom to five kids, Monday to Friday, for 18 months. I used the additional income from my R+F business to help pay off our student loan debt and support the needs of our family while this was going on.”

Melanie also tackled obstacles in her Rodan + Fields business during this time. “I worked a lot less during that time, and that’s the beauty of the business: depending on what’s going on in your life, you have control over how much you work. Thankfully, my business sustained during this time but my growth did stall. My team has a wonderful culture, a really good camaraderie, and lifelong friendships have developed between us. So at this point, my goal is to create momentum by leading the way and doing the work. People follow a solid leader, and so that’s really my goal: to become the best version of myself, show others what is possible, and to set the example that my amazing team members will want to follow.”

Embracing the journey

This recent challenge has led Melanie to value all aspects of her journey equally. “I talk to my kids a lot now about the value of failing your way forward — not beating yourself up, but seeing everything as a learning experience and an opportunity to grow and develop as a person. Failure is not an indication of who you are or who you can be. It’s just a part of the process. That’s a huge thing I’ve learned through my R+F business.”

Melanie feels deeply grateful for the confidence her Rodan + Fields business has instilled in her. “I have five kids, and I’ve always been busy volunteering in our community. But I spent a lot of years feeling a little lost for fulfillment. I wondered often if I was meeting my full potential in life. By starting this business all of that went away. I used every ounce of creative energy in me to figure the business out. There was a huge learning curve for me, and I definitely had to push myself out of my comfort zone a lot. But I’ve learned so much, and I think my favorite thing about building this type of business is the personal growth I’ve experienced.”

Grateful to find peace

Moving forward, Melanie is motivated to work even harder, knowing that the challenges for her family are far from over. “There’s just so much unknown in our lives right now. The thought of ‘what if’ really drives me. My husband also has a chronic kidney disease, so there’s a lot of uncertainty. All things considered, my R+F business gives our family the peace of mind that we lost through this career switch. It’s brought peace into a very uncertain life circumstance. I know this business can be a safety net and can allow me to work without having to sacrifice the responsibilities I have at home. It just brings our family peace to know that I’m building this business, especially when there’s no limit to where I’m going to take it moving forward.”

She explains, “So many people struggle with feelings of limitation, and I fall into this as well sometimes. The Rodan + Fields work for me is hard. I feel like I’m constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone. And why do I do it? Because I believe in the vehicle. There’s nothing else that gives you the ability to set boundaries and priorities in your life. You have control over all of that as an Independent Consultant. Expand your vision. See the big picture. And recognize that any disappointments or setbacks on the way are just a part of the process.”

Tell Me More…

Have there been any especially significant people in your R+F journey? My crossline friends Melissa Williamson, Kathryn Rouse, and Leah Wood. I didn’t know them prior to R+F, but they have become some of my dearest friends.

Where do you draw your inspiration from in life? In life, my motivation to work R+F always boils down to my husband and kids and bringing more peace into our lives.

If you could meet anyone, who would it be? I think I’d rather just go to lunch and get a mani/pedi with my mom or my best friend Elizabeth Jorgensen! They are the two wisest women I have ever known.

What is the best business advice you were given? Taylor Guess once told me, “There are no emergencies in this business.” This advice has given me permission to set boundaries and keep balance with my priorities.
