Melissa King – Spreading Hope with Infectious Positivity

As Melissa King wrote a prescription for one of her patients, she thought about what initially inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. The most fulfilling aspect of her job was getting to help others and, for a long time, she thought she’d found the best field to do just that. However, after learning about a new business, she immediately felt drawn to the prospect of serving others in a different way. Melissa’s business gave her an outlet to be social and the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded people who also wanted to put others first. It brought more meaningful relationships into her life; it reawakened her passion and gave her something to share with her family and friends. Best of all, it empowered her to help others in ways she’d never been able to before. The sense of fulfillment Melissa gained affirmed that her business was a part of her calling—and she couldn’t wait to share the hope she felt with others.

Determining a prognosis

Raised in Cypress, California, Melissa moved away to attend medical school, but returned to southern California to complete her residency and training. She decided to stay there and began working as an infectious disease doctor, eventually going into private practice. During that time, she married her husband, Bryan, who is also a physician. However, in July of 2014, Melissa was browsing Facebook and noticed that a friend had posted several “before and after” photos of various Customers and Consultants after they’d used Rodan + Fields® products. “I was impressed with the results, and I knew she’d left her career as a pharmacist to be a stay-at-home mom, but I’d never had skin issues myself. I didn’t reach out to her, but I continued watching her on social media.”

Interested in learning more, Melissa reached out to her friend, thinking she would at least try the products. “She suggested I consider becoming a Consultant. I wasn’t interested in selling initially, but I enrolled for the discount. That night I took a closer look at the stories and product results of other Consultants and I felt a spark. Seeing all of the ways that people’s lives were being changed by their businesses was so inspiring. I thought about it and felt like I was being led to do this. As a doctor, I was already on a path dedicated to helping others, but I really saw this opportunity as a way to expand that passion.” A few months later, Melissa’s family went on a cruise and, after being exposed to the sun, her daughter developed severely itchy and irritated skin. “She was crying and scratching so I took her to the pediatrician and he prescribed a steroid cream, but I didn’t want to use that on my 14-month-old. I used the SOOTHE Regimen instead, and it worked immediately. That solidified my belief in the products even more.”

Addressing symptoms

Melissa began sharing the products and the business and, in under two months, working five to ten hours a week, she made her initial investment back. “I was shocked at how well I could do by just sharing this with others. Once I saw the potential, I felt compelled to really focus on my business even more.” The following January, working 20 to 25 hours a week, Melissa achieved Level V and, from there, her organization continued to grow. “I started this because I wanted to help people; I honestly didn’t think it would change my life at all, but it has. I currently work 70 to 80 hours a week with my private practice, and I’m always on call. As my R+F business grew, I realized that I could eventually cut back those hours. While I don’t think I would ever fully retire because of how much I love my job as a physician and how much I’ve invested in my career, I can choose to reduce my hours.”

In December of 2015, Melissa had her third child, and it was an eye-opening experience to still work while she was on maternity leave. “I’ve still been able to work my business from home.” In the future, Melissa hopes to spend more time with her family and give back to her community more actively. And once her children are older, she plans to participate in medical missions.

Writing a prescription

Melissa is amazed at how passionate she has become about her business. “Once I started, I couldn’t stop. It felt incredible to touch others’ lives in a way that is very different from the impact I get to make in healthcare. Patients come in and I treat them or prescribe an antibiotic, and then they go home—I don’t get to see the results because people only come in when they’re sick. There isn’t the personal connection which is so prominent with R+F. I get to see my Customers’ “before and after” photos, and I’m able to work with my teammates one on one to help them achieve their goals—and that is extremely rewarding.”

In the beginning, Bryan didn’t fully understand Melissa’s passion for the business. “He wondered why I was spending so much time on R+F when I had my private practice. Then, last year, I earned a trip to Cancun. While there, he had the chance to meet some of the other R+F Leaders and finally saw what I saw—an opportunity to collaborate with amazing people who wanted to make a difference. After the trip, he said he understood why I was doing this and could see how much I loved it. My own life, as well as others’ lives, have been forever changed for the better because I stepped outside of my comfort zone and said, ‘yes’ to this opportunity.”

Finding the cure

Melissa believes that with a solid vision, a firm commitment, and an optimistic outlook, anyone can achieve success. “I’ve always thought that positivity attracts positivity, and my experiences with this Company have proven that to be entirely true. I always encourage people to live their passion because that is how we find our vision and genuinely connect with our purpose. You can’t teach a belief; you need to feel it. For me, this experience has reawakened my desire to help others by giving me a new way to empower change and spread hope.”
