Meredith Kresge – Finding Her Purpose by Focusing on Others

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Monday, January 25th, 2016

See Meredith’s updated story here.

Meredith Kresge was shocked to hear the words coming out of her six-year-old twins’ mouths. They were discussing how lucky they were that their mom was able to work from home and be with them, and how bad they felt for some of their friends whose moms had to work a lot. Until that moment, Meredith hadn’t realized they understood she was a working mom, building her career around them. It hadn’t always been that way, though.

A few years back, she’d decided to start a business, hoping to diversify her family’s income and create more free time for herself. But she never expected it to grow as big as it did. Before long, it had provided far more than she ever dreamed possible. Not only was she living the life she desired, but she was also helping others do the same. It felt like she’d finally found her purpose, and she was humbled to have the opportunity to focus on others.

Scouting the Area

It had always been convenient how well Meredith’s real estate career went hand in hand with her husband’s work as a builder. However, in 2007, when the mortgage industry experienced a severe recession, the two of them working in the same industry became a very scary thing. “We were lucky enough to find a niche market with entry level homes, which were in high demand once interest rates and prices came down. Tapping into that enabled us to make it through the recession, but it was a huge eye-opener. All of our eggs were in one basket, and we were in an extremely volatile industry. I wanted to diversify our income, but didn’t know what else I could find that would have flexible hours and allow me to work around my kids.”

In January of 2011, Meredith’s friend, Marissa, shared the Rodan + Fields® business opportunity with her. “Initially, I didn’t want to admit that I saw the potential because I didn’t think the opportunity was for me, and I wasn’t into skincare. But, I couldn’t ignore the fact that, in this day and age, having a recognizable brand is a huge asset in any industry. I also trusted Marissa’s opinion and knew that, if she was associating herself with this Company, there had to be something to it.” Meredith decided to do some research and educated herself on the business model. “I could see it was a great opportunity, but I questioned whether I could do it—it felt so far out of my realm. But, I also thought that, if I didn’t try, I would regret it.”

The Perfect Location

Meredith and her husband discussed the business, taking into consideration how busy they were already. “I was working 60 hours a week and we had one-year-old twins, so it seemed as though I didn’t have enough room on my plate for something else. But, in the end, we decided that we just needed to get a bigger plate. We felt it was worth it to fit this into our lives.”

Meredith enrolled as an Independent Consultant in February of 2011 and, once her Business Kit arrived, she began using the UNBLEMISH Regimen. “I’ve struggled with acne for years—it’s one of those things that really affects your personality and self-image. Within two weeks, I saw a drastic change in the appearance of my skin. These products were the first thing to ever work for me. I am now makeup and foundation free. I finally have my ideal clear skin.”

Within a month of working her business six hours a week, Meredith had earned her initial investment back. As she watched her income increase, she recognized even greater potential and began trying to devote more time to her business. Six months later, working 10 to 15 hours a week, she achieved Level V and, a year in, she matched her real estate income. “What had taken me ten years to build in real estate, I had matched in one year with Rodan + Fields. It was an incredible realization that I was suddenly on the same track as the people I had initially looked up to—those who had built phenomenal businesses of their own.” By December of 2012, Meredith had transitioned out of real estate, other than representing her husband, in order to work her business full-time. This past October, she also earned a white Lexus through the R+F Road to RFX Car Program.

A Valuable Asset

The time and freedom Meredith has gained since starting her business has been a crucial part of her journey. In September of 2014, her mother became very sick with cancer. Because Meredith was in control of her schedule, she was able to give her mother six months of undivided attention before she passed away in March of 2015. “I am so grateful that this opportunity entered my life when it did. Not only could I be there for my mom during that difficult time and go with her to her radiation and chemotherapy treatments, but I was also able to continue earning an income and growing my business as it still fit into the nooks and crannies I had available. I could never have done that with my previous job. I would have had to go to part-time or quit altogether in order to dedicate that time to my mom. Getting to be there for her made me realize that life is too short to waste on things that aren’t important. It’s made me want to give 100 percent to the aspects of my life that I’m passionate about so that I never have regrets about how I spent my time. My mom taught me to live in such a way that I never have to look back and say, ‘I should have…’ and this opportunity is empowering me to follow that advice.”

Meredith is grateful that she now has complete control over her schedule and loves that she can fit work around her life rather than fitting life in around work. “I can arrange my days accordingly—whether I need to nurse my sick kids, volunteer at their school, help my husband with work, or coach a teammate—I can’t put a price tag on that.” Her family is also able to enjoy taking more vacations together and can now spend every weekend during the summer at the lake. “That time together is so important to us and having the ability to work from anywhere makes the possibilities endless because being away from home doesn’t inhibit any aspect of my business—I can take it anywhere we go.” She and her husband are also saving more for their retirement and their children’s education. “It’s definitely allowing us to embrace the moment and plan for the future.” Meredith’s next goal is to replace her husband’s income so that he can be home more with their kids too. “He works such long hours, and I would love for him to be able to have more control over who he works with and when. We’re seeing changes in the real estate industry again, and it’s comforting to know that if something did happen to his career, we have something secure in place.”

Making an Offer

The flexibility Meredith’s business provides has also encouraged her to refocus her priorities. “I feel like a completely different person because of this experience. My life used to be all about quantity—how many deals I could close at work and how many hours I was able to be a hands-on mom. But, my business has helped me see that it’s not about numbers, it’s about the quality of the time and with whom you are spending it. I’m now much more focused on building and nurturing relationships.”

While Meredith is proud of her achievements, she finds it more rewarding to help others achieve their goals. “I’ve never had a way to impact others the way I do now. This business has truly humbled me because it’s shown me that amazing things happen when you put others first. It’s an incredible feeling to see others develop skills they didn’t even know they had and it’s beyond rewarding to watch someone step into their own greatness, take control of the changes they want to see in their life, and create something truly amazing. When I look at all of the people on my team who have worked hard and utilized this opportunity to transform their lives, it motivates me to continue sharing this business with others.”

Meredith is consistently impressed by the supportive nature of the business and feels that having an outlet where she can truly focus on others has enabled her to find her purpose in life. “The people involved in this Company are so selfless and willing to help one another because we all want to see each other succeed. For me, this has been a way for me to find my own identity. I’ve always been known as Lance’s wife or the twins’ mom. And there are so many real estate agents; I used to feel like just another realtor. I never felt like I had my own identity, so I was searching for a way to shine out on my own and utilize my gifts. With R+F, I’ve finally found something I’m passionate about, and that is using my talents to help others and empower them to create the lives they want.”
