Meribeth Puckett – A New Career for a New Life

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Friday, August 23rd, 2013

The heat was brutal in Virginia during the summer of 2012. Long, humid August days fatigued D.C. commuters and checked the pace of enthusiastic outdoor joggers. Nightfall offered little respite from daytime temperatures, and the entire metropolitan area became like a pressure cooker, slowly but steadily gathering steam. In a local hospital bed within a cool, quiet room, Meribeth Puckett’s husband lay dying. Having been diagnosed with kidney failure five years earlier, he had now reached a terminal condition. Dialysis was no longer working, and the only thing that could save him would be a transplant. But a new kidney hadn’t been found or promised, so Meribeth had no choice but to hope, pray, and hold her husband’s hand.

Not knowing what lay ahead of her in the coming days, Meribeth felt her life was in crisis. Already suffering the financial hardship that stemmed from her husband’s loss of work and medical bills, the previous five years had been difficult enough. Now, she faced losing the person she cared for the most. Meribeth hoped for the best, but braced herself for the worst. “It was a very dark and scary time in my family’s life,” she recounts, not wanting to linger too much over the memories of those terrifying days. Those days, hot and unforgiving, would finally reach their end, thanks to a little help from her friends.

Help came in two forms for Meribeth’s family that August. A close friend offered her kidney, and after a few agonizing weeks of waiting to see if she was a match, Meribeth’s husband received a healthy kidney that saved his life and their world changed. Now they could look forward to vacations and retirement and the sound of their grandchildren playing in the back yard.

But August wasn’t yet over, and life dealt them another blow when Meribeth’s contract job with the U.S. Army was downsized. In order to remain on the contract, she was forced to take a $20,000 cut in her salary. This was especially hard when she had been the sole provider for five years, and was now facing further financial strain. But she didn’t let it lessen her happiness with having her husband back, and says she knew there would be a way out of this hardship, which wasn’t nearly as devastating as almost losing her spouse. She reflects, “I knew we did not come this far, that my friend hadn’t given her kidney, my husband hadn’t been given new life, just for us to barely get by. I knew deep down that everything would be okay.”

Things would be more than okay for the Puckett family, because they had more than one wonderful friend. Meribeth met with a friend one morning for coffee, and as they caught up and shared stories from their lives, Meribeth noticed how amazing her skin looked. She jokingly asked if her if she had had work done on her face. Her friend laughed out a “no,” and explained the skincare products she was using and selling. Meribeth grew interested in both the products and the business, and realized that this was the opportunity she needed to get out of her financial crisis. After mulling it over, she decided to sign on as a Consultant for Rodan + Fields.

As the sweltering days of August faded into cool September mornings, Meribeth grew her business and supplemented her income. She achieved all this within a few short months, while still working a very hectic job at the Pentagon. When asked how she managed to do it, she emphasizes one word: focus. “I had within me the focus that if in a year my company asks me to take another cut in my salary, I will look back at them and say, no thank you, I’m leaving. My plan B has now become my plan A.” She loves her job, but wants to be in charge of her own future. Running her own business means no one can lower her salary, and she controls how successful she is. She also adds, “I don’t want to be getting up at 5:30 in the morning for very many more years, reporting to someone else. I would rather spend my time with my grandchildren, and I don’t want to miss anything.”

This Summer, no matter how high the mercury rises, Meribeth will play with her grandson under a bright sun, and he will get to spend time with both his grandmother and grandfather this year. Last year’s struggles are behind them and Meribeth anticipates the arrival of a granddaughter. August is now upon us, and it’s the perfect time to celebrate a new year and a new life.
