Michelle Grawer – The Triumph of Overcoming

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Thursday, May 31st, 2018

Michelle Grawer was a personal trainer and busy mom to three boys. When she first heard her neighbor talking about the new skincare line she was using, Michelle was really interested to hear her story. “I grew up on the beach and I had really heavy freckling on my skin, which affected my self-esteem.

When I finally got together with her, I noticed a huge change in the appearance of her skin. She’s always had freckles like me, so it was a very big transformation, and she kept talking about how much she loved the products. But when we started talking about the business side of Rodan + Fields, I immediately had the ‘aha moment’ I had been waiting for. I just knew, immediately, that this was the right decision for me. The opportunity was very clear in my head.”

Just starting out

Michelle, a proud native of Houston, Texas, launched her Rodan + Fields business in 2012 and instantly fell in love with the products. “The REVERSE Regimen has really been a life changer. I had tried all sorts of skincare, and I felt like I finally found something that really was going to change the appearance of my skin, making it brighter and more even.”

Swept up in her excitement, Michelle went straight to the bank to open up a new account for her budding skincare business. “Walking out, I could hear the ladies chuckling at the thought that I had something really big with my little skincare company. Then I went to talk to my friends and family about it, and most of them were not interested. But at the end of the day, when I looked in the mirror, I knew what I had to offer. I had confidence in myself and I just kept pushing forward.”

Challenges and successes

Michelle worked through her initial challenges and dedicated herself to reaching out to as many people as possible, determined to make this opportunity work. “I like connecting one-to-one with people, but I was really shy, and I knew that was an obstacle I would have to overcome to be successful. Through my personal training acquaintances, I shared R+F with as many people as I could, meeting with each of them individually at the coffee shop up the street. My claim to fame was that my business was built one cup of coffee at a time.”

“My first three years with Rodan + Fields, I barely did anything that wasn’t income producing. I didn’t pull weeds. I hired a weekly house cleaner. There was little sleep in the first three years while I really focused on getting my business off the ground and moving.” Michelle’s hard work and dedication started paying off. “Early on I hit important Milestones that built my confidence. Within the first few months, working 25-35 hours per week, I chose to walk away from my job as a personal trainer. Within a year I became a Lexus Achiever.”

Meeting a wall

Because of Michelle’s success in Little Rock, Arkansas, she was invited to speak when corporate events were hosted in her city. Unfortunately, Michelle felt her shyness was a major obstacle. “That was my biggest fear in life — to stand up and talk in front of even six people was really difficult for me to do. It was very obvious how uncomfortable it was for me. I hadn’t been in business long enough to really fine tune my skills or be really comfortable presenting. I hadn’t had the opportunity to practice in front of smaller groups. When I was asked to speak in front of a room of 300+ people, I felt incredibly vulnerable. It was terrifying.”

Due to her discomfort, Michelle experienced a surprising decrease in motivation to work her R+F business. “When you get stuck in business, you don’t feel like talking to people. You’re afraid you won’t say the right thing, and you don’t have that sense of attraction about you. It was really hard and I had to get out of the funk.” Michelle kept a positivity journal, changed up her networking routine, joined a local business-building group, improved her social media practices, and read countless inspirational books. “There’s a long list of things I finally did to get out of my shell, change my mindset, and get on the other side of that wall. Eventually, my efforts paid off and I hit RFX a couple years later.”

Michelle is grateful for Team Get In The Zone — the group of individuals who supported her through this journey. “I’m thankful for my challenges because they allowed me to actually relate to my team so much more. With R+F, as with any other business, there are going to be a lot of ups and downs. I had to work through a lot to reach RFX. But even though it was really hard to be stuck for so long, I knew I would learn something and be able to share that with my team members.”

Moving into the future

Looking forward, Michelle is excited to continue gaining leadership skills and fostering more leaders in her organization. “My team has a lot of individual leadership, which is so nice because I didn’t have to be in front or on stage all the time. I was happy to take the backseat and watch as my team members stepped up to the plate. Personally, I like helping everyone. I think of each Independent Consultant as an important part of our one goal, no matter what team they happen to be on. As we lock arms with Consultants on and off our team, I’m reminded how powerful a force that is.”

“As far as what this journey has done for me and my family, it’s all really positive. I’m very thankful that my R+F business has built my confidence and has helped me create my own story of overcoming. Experiences like this teach you that you deserve more in life. If you’re open to change and you allow opportunities to come across your plate, it’s really possible to be whatever you want to be.”
