Missy Van Putten – Expecting Miracles

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Friday, July 13th, 2018

Missy Van Putten joined Rodan + Fields in August 2011, in the middle of significant family stress. “My husband Brent was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2005, and when I learned about R+F he just had his second brain surgery and was starting another two years of chemo. Our boys were young, Zack was eight and Luke was six, but they were old enough to understand a little of what was happening. I own a recruiting agency in Atlanta but had taken a leave of absence to be a full-time caregiver, mother, and wife.”

“My very dear friend Amy Hobgood introduced R+F to me when not many other people would have offered it. I credit her for doing the really hard thing and asking me if I would be interested. At first, I wasn’t at all. But I was trying to figure out a new normal for my family, and how to make extra money without taking more time away from my other business, my kids, and my husband. Rodan + Fields seemed like the perfect fit.”

Starting small

Though Missy had little interest in skincare or direct sales, she signed on as an Independent Consultant hoping she could supplement what she made at her recruiting firm. Though everyone’s results vary, her modest initial efforts brought a surprising amount of success. “I shared the news casually with just a few people in the beginning — particularly girlfriends back home in Virginia who wanted to support me and my family but couldn’t be here to help in person. Friends started buying from me and really loving the products, then a few decided they wanted to join me in business. I had a little momentum going even though I did this business very part-time, around 5 hours per week.”

While Missy and her family had a lot of things going on at the time — she wanted to involve her whole family in the R+F excitement regardless. “When I started to have some success, I told my kids that if I earned Level V I would take them to Boston. They’re big Red Sox fans. Every single day they’d ask me if I hit my goal, and through that experience, I feel like I’ve taught my kids how to have a goal and work hard for it. One of the greatest moments was taking my family to Boston in the fall of 2013, and seeing Zack and Luke walk into Fenway Park to see the ball field. I still remember the looks on their faces. They were in awe. That was a great memory and a big source of motivation for me.”

Getting through tough times

That moment of success was a while ago, and Missy has seen plenty of ups and downs with her business — and her life — since then. “In February 2016 my husband had his third brain surgery and unfortunately suffered a stroke. He went through a lot afterwards including six weeks of daily radiation, six months of chemo, and today is still working regularly with physical and occupational therapists. But he’s doing well and continues to work hard every day! He is a miracle, and I’ve been expecting miracles for 13 years since Brent first got diagnosed. Things have been challenging, but I’m grateful that I have my Rodan + Fields business to help get me through the times when I wasn’t able to focus on my recruiting business. I love that I can be anywhere — sitting in a hospital room, in the waiting room of a doctor’s office, or in the airport flying to and from appointments and still work my business. As long as I have WiFi, I can continue to support my family.”

Missy also feels thankful for the welcome distraction her Rodan + Fields business offered. “I’ve never been one of those people who researched medical issues on the Internet. Instead, every night I’d read about R+F or contact somebody about the products or the business. My R+F business gives me something to think about outside of healthcare issues. It’s also introduced me to so many new friends from all over the country who now know our family and pray for us.”

Passion and drive

Missy’s connection with Rodan + Fields has already spurred a sense of passion and direction that she is wholly grateful for. “My mission is to educate people, especially women, to have a plan B or a contingency plan for themselves. You never know what’s going to happen in life. My family’s life changed in a second, and we weren’t expecting it. I was 35 years old then, my husband was 39, we had two young boys, and a very successful business. If I can teach other people to plan ahead for the ‘what ifs’ in life, that’s what I want to do. Having a plan B is just an insurance policy. I want to teach people how to provide for themselves before they are backed into a corner.”

Other big goals on the horizon for Missy include earning her Lexus, stepping away from her recruiting firm to pursue R+F full time, and giving back in the field of brain tumor research. “It’s a big goal, but hopefully my Rodan + Fields business will be able to help support my family by then, so I can start contributing to brain tumor research funding. I would also like to educate caregivers and help those who love them.”

Grateful for her future

With support from her dear friends and sideline partners across the country, Missy continues to pour into her R+F business. “People always say R+F is personal development with a paycheck, and I’ve grown personally in this business in ways I wasn’t expecting. I will be forever grateful to Amy for introducing this to me at a time where a lot of people would not have approached somebody like me. This has been a valuable distraction and experience for me, and one that I hope will completely change my family’s life. I want people to know that if I can do this, with everything that I have going on in my life, anybody can do this business. I’ve seen a lot of miracles happen and maybe this Rodan + Fields business will be a miracle for my family.”

Where do you draw your inspiration from in life? My husband, my two boys, and my parents — all of whom support me in so many ways.

What’s your biggest quirk? My “long stories short” are not always short.

What is your dream R+F trip destination? Hawaii — we had a Spring Break trip planned to Maui right before my husband’s 3rd surgery. We had to cancel that trip and we were looking so forward to it. I promised my boys and husband that we’d get there one day.

What is your favorite R+F memory? All of the Lead the Way trips that I have earned — Banff, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, and Cancun!

Your story hit very close to home. I have been married 19 years with 2 children. My husband was diagnosed with his 1st brain tumor in 2002 and his second in 2013. We now are dealing with the complications of stage 3 brain cancer and
have been struggling to find a “new normal” for so long. I just started using these products. You are an inspiration and I hope I
continue to find the strength to step out of my comfort zone and find a plan B.
    Thank you for sharing your
    story of courage!
