Nikki Lazo – Building Dreams Together

Posted by on Friday, May 29th, 2015

As a child, Nikki Lazo knew she wanted to do big things. Perhaps she would discover a cure for a disease or end world hunger—whatever it was, her dream was to change the world. But, as she got older, the scope of the impact she felt she could make began to dwindle. “As the years go by, what seems possible as a child can often fade with the weight of life—you realize you aren’t able to give back the way you’d hoped, or you aren’t earning enough to do the things you’d planned to do.”

Regardless of these perceived limitations, Nikki always tried her best to make a difference. And, in pursuing a business opportunity she originally thought was a step away from her career in service, she found herself among a group of like-minded people who were also striving to do and give more. As she embraced this new chapter in her life, she realized that she could do so much more with a team; that was the key, and her business was the vehicle to make the change she’d dreamed of.

Establishing a foundation

Planning on making an impact with her career, Nikki chose to pursue a degree in social work, and after graduating, she found a job with a nonprofit shelter that assisted homeless families. Nikki intended to go back to work after having her first child in 2005, but her employer didn’t invite her to return after her maternity leave. Although it was a sacrifice financially, she and her husband decided that it was best for her to stay at home for their newborn child during his early years. When she entered back into the workplace a couple years later, she started working at an international adoption agency and absolutely loved being able to help families in their adoption process.

Nikki loves that her business allows her the freedom and flexibility to put her family first.

In 2010, Nikki went on maternity leave for her second child and, once again, had issues getting her position back after her leave. She decided that, rather than looking for another job with a nonprofit, she needed to find a new way to earn an income, and she started doing some research on businesses she could work from home. “I knew there was more out there and more I wanted to do on a professional level, but I didn’t know what it was or how I’d do it. I also wanted the security of knowing I had control over my future in the event my husband and I decided to have more children, and that whatever I did next was worth committing the next ten years of my life to.”

While searching, Nikki came across the Rodan + Fields® business opportunity. She recognized the Doctors and was intrigued by the established brand identity, as well as the Company’s credibility. “I was really blown away by the potential I saw. I thought this could actually be the answer I was looking for and a way to change my family’s financial situation.”

Restructuring the groundwork

Between Nikki’s nonprofit salary and the income from her husband’s startup personal business, their family had been living paycheck to paycheck, and neither of their jobs offered retirement plans. “I knew when we got married that we needed to quickly find a way to set up savings for ourselves and our kids. So, I was truly excited to learn that you could ‘will’ your R+F business to your children. Something in my heart was telling me this opportunity was huge.”

Nikki enrolled as an Independent Consultant in February of 2011 and began working about 10 hours a week. Initially, she was worried that her lack of sales experience would make it difficult to grow her business, but the team culture and the results the products had on her own skin made it easier than she thought. Eventually, she was able to share the opportunity more—even with complete strangers—something she hadn’t felt comfortable doing before.

In addition to encouraging her to reach out and connect with new people, Nikki’s business has also given her a confidence boost. During the pregnancy of her second child, she developed acne, and it was beginning to feel as though she had tried everything to treat it, to no avail. After using the UNBLEMISH Regimen, she finally saw results, and her skin’s appearance improved significantly. “That really helped my self-esteem. I’d never dealt with skin issues before, and I didn’t realize how much your skin can affect the way you feel about yourself. Being able to offer others a way to improve their own skin and thus, their confidence, is so rewarding.”

Raising the supports

Nikki was both surprised and impressed that her business fulfilled her original career goals. “I went into social work because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives by empowering them to help themselves and providing a way for them to improve their situations. When I started my R+F business, I didn’t think there was a correlation, but there truly is. I am now able to help people build the life of their dreams—block by block. Whether it’s overcoming fears or developing skills or reaching milestones—we all need support from others, because we’re much more effective when we’re building dreams together.”

As her business continued to grow and her teammates achieved success, Nikki was fueled to work even harder. By August of 2013, she had reached Level V, still working part-time hours. “The energy from everyone around you is contagious, and I was motivated to push myself—that sort of support made me see how much more I could achieve.” The collaboration within her team provides a level of excitement that Nikki wasn’t expecting. Once apprehensive about reaching out to people, she now loves each new encounter and enjoys learning about the personal goals of others. “I’ve learned that everyone enters my life for a purpose. I don’t always know the reason right away, but I always end up learning from them or gaining inspiration. The amount of joy and gratitude I get from seeing others grow and succeed is incredible.”

Her blueprint for change

Initially, Nikki just wanted to help pay for her children’s daycare and ensure her family could get by financially. But as her business grew, she saw much greater potential and not only replaced her previous income, but matched her husband’s six figure annual income while working part-time hours. “I wasn’t striving for huge things at first, but now I can’t even imagine my life without R+F. I knew there was potential with the Company, but I thought that kind of success was much further down the line.”

The time and financial freedom Nikki has gained allows her to be home full-time for her children and to help out in their classrooms and attend field trips. Recently, Nikki and her husband were able to sell the house they purchased back when she first started her business and have now purchased their second home. “This is the house we’ve always dreamed of living in. It’s so exciting to be able to do the things we want and provide for our kids in the way we hoped.”

Nikki’s business has helped her see a way to make a greater impact, just as she envisioned as a young girl. She has been able to donate to various organizations in ways she never imagined possible. Last year, she and her husband were able to give a total amount equal to what Nikki used to earn in one year’s salary, which was a dream come true. She also supports a village in Uganda through an organization that helps single mothers internationally, and she is working to establish a foundation that raises awareness about human trafficking. “Not only has my business given me the means to give back in more significant ways, but it has provided the means to give back in ways I hadn’t thought of before. It’s given me the freedom to believe that anything is possible and that if I want to make a change, I have the power to do so. When we work together, there is so much we can build.”
