Reem Messeih – Freeing Her Ambition
Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Raised with a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed, it was hard for Reem Messeih to imagine not having a career. Her father, a diplomat with the Egyptian Government, sacrificed his entire career to bring Reem and her sister to America when they were young. “My parents are the single greatest influence in my life. Watching them work so hard to rebuild their lives was so inspiring. I saw them work multiple jobs at a time, sacrifice endlessly for us, but to them, the skies were limitless in this country for those who worked hard and put in the effort. There are chunks of my childhood where my dad was gone because of work and, now that I have my own boys and see how, as a parent, you will do anything for your kids, I truly realize how hard they labored. I appreciate it and I love them for it, but I don’t want my kids to look back and not remember me being around. I want them to understand the value of hard work, but know they don’t have to work 100 hours a week to be successful.”

Reem loves that her business enables her to find balance between her professional and family responsibilities.

Reem is grateful that her business has enabled her to find a balance between her professional and personal life.

This past April, Reem sat down with her husband to assess what qualified as a successful life to them. Working stressful jobs with long commutes left them both tired and lacking patience at the end of the day. So, in May of 2014, Reem put in her resignation. “We decided that the life we had been leading was not our measure of success. We didn’t want to raise our boys to think that success means being out of the house for 12 hours a day. We wanted to spend more time together.”  Taking matters into her own hands, Reem decided to create the balanced life she desired, one that allowed her to dream and encouraged her to free her ambition and strive for success in all areas of her life once more.

After 13 years in Change Management and Corporate Communications, Reem decided she needed a change. She had loved the corporate experience, getting to travel around the world and work abroad, but, after she had children, she found it difficult to balance her family and three little boys along with her career. “I couldn’t be happy wherever I was. When I was at work, I felt like I was neglecting my family and when I was home I felt like I was neglecting my work.” Still wanting fulfillment from a career, Reem started actively looking for entrepreneurial opportunities that wouldn’t take her away from her family, something she could do on her own terms.

After reading an article about Rodan + Fields® in a business magazine, the business opportunity appealed to Reem. She did some more research and was impressed by how it could potentially change people’s lives. “I had been approached many times about direct selling and I always thought it wasn’t for me. But, seeing the caliber of people doing this changed my perspective. I figured if these smart people saw potential with this opportunity, then there must be something to it.”

It's so exciting for Reem to

It’s so exciting for Reem to have a successful career once again without having to give anything up this time.

Wanting to know more, Reem connected with Jamie Petersen on social media and reached out to her. At that point, she quickly fell in love with the Company. “It really spoke to me because I wanted an opportunity that would allow me to pay it forward.” Coming from a community of intelligent women that were all in the same predicament that she was, Reem thought this would be an amazing outlet for all of them to define success on their own terms without giving anything up. “They all have successful careers that they have had to put on the backburner for their families, but with this, we can work towards success, help each other and pay it back to our community and the causes and charities that we support. So, I decided to get involved as an Independent Consultant and spread the word as fast as I could.”

With a background in defining corporate culture and creating an open work environment where employees can see their own value, Reem was amazed by the Rodan + Fields culture. “The team mentality is incredible and there are no politics or superiority issues. Everyone sincerely wants to watch others grow, succeed and excel. It’s such an encouraging and empowering environment. I feel support from every direction and it’s fun. I don’t see myself ever stopping.”

At first, Reem was worried, not wanting to put people in awkward situations or feel like she was depending on friends or family to help her business thrive. But, at her business launch, she discovered that it was no longer about her. It suddenly became about others and how this opportunity could help them too. “I found out that so many of my girlfriends were struggling with skin issues and people were recognizing on their own that this Company and its products could help them. Since then, I’ve realized that everyone has their own individual process, and respecting that process is critical in this business. Some people get it right away while others take a little longer. Now, I don’t feel like I’m selling anything; I feel like I’m a matchmaker. I have a solution that could work if someone has a problem. Let’s see if it’s a match.”

Reem loves how her business fits around her family's schedule.

Now, Reem is proud to have the chance to prove to herself that she can live a life of balance, being successful at home while also running a business. “Out of all of the opportunities out there, this is the one I wanted and felt was the best match for my family’s needs. I love that it fits around our schedule and that I’m not sacrificing anything or missing any milestones with my kids. And it makes me happy to know that my parents are proud of me for following in their footsteps, continuing to take risks and set my own rules.”

With her ambition restored and her drive stronger than ever, Reem has big plans for the future. She would love to help her parents retire while also helping others see that, just because they haven’t done something before, doesn’t mean they can’t do it at all.

Reem is passionate about giving back, ambitious to heal where there is hurting. “We don’t live in this world alone, there are so many problems and we need to help. I want to share an opportunity that empowers people to support causes and spread love, and if this is the vehicle to help me do that, I will drive it all the way home.”
