Stephanie Godoy – An Opportunity Worth Seizing

Posted by on Friday, January 22nd, 2016

Being a debt-free homeowner, taking luxury vacations, and having the ability to save money each month—it all sounded too good to be true. Stephanie Godoy had imagined that those things might be possible in the distant future, but they happened sooner than she’d ever expected. When she decided to pursue a new business opportunity, she thought it would be something fun to do on the side and, perhaps, to earn some cushion money as well. Less than a year later, her life had completely transformed, and she suddenly felt in control of her future. Looking back, she is grateful that she took the time to try something different and seize the opportunity to change her life.

Presented with a new option

For several years, Stephanie worked full-time in wealth management for a bank, in addition to attending night school and pursuing a business degree in entrepreneurial leadership. In 2014, while at a wedding in Boston, she met a woman named Nicole and, upon Stephanie’s return to Vancouver, the two kept in touch via Facebook.

In January of 2015, Nicole suggested that Stephanie look into the Rodan + Fields® business opportunity, since the Company was launching in Canada the following month. “I told her there was no way I could do it at that time. I was in the middle of planning my wedding, looking for a house to buy, and doing a practicum for school which, ironically, involved starting my own business.” Stephanie decided to start a candle business for school and was putting in 30 hours a week on top of her full-time job. “Nicole followed up with me one more time about R+F, and I told her I didn’t think I had enough time, but she explained how I could work the business around my schedule in little pockets of time, on my own terms—and I’d get a great discount on some amazing products. The opportunity sounded interesting, so I decided I’d give it a try and see what happened.”

Stephanie was asked to share her story at the Rodan + Fields “Building on Excellence” Executive Tour in the fall of 2015.

Recognizing the potential

Stephanie enrolled as an Independent Consultant in March of 2015 and posted that she’d started a business on her Instagram. “I was pleasantly surprised at how many people reached out to me and said they were interested.” A month later, Stephanie’s practicum ended, and she began focusing more on her business. “It was really cool to have Customers come back and tell me that these products were the only things that had ever worked for them and that their lives had changed because of it. A few even joined me in business.”

That following July, Stephanie and her husband got married and, a month later, they moved into the house they’d bought in West Vancouver. Stephanie was content to casually share her business and was enjoying the additional income. But, as she started planning for the future and thinking about having kids, she realized that things weren’t going to go the way she’d imagined. “I found out that, if I went on maternity leave, I wouldn’t earn any commissions from the bank—and I counted on those to make ends meet. We wouldn’t be able to pay our mortgage without that income. I started to panic, but suddenly a light went on—I realized that R+F could be the way to make up for that income loss.”

Stephanie and her husband, Elias, were married in Cabo in July of 2015.

Fully committing

Stephanie rallied together with her teammates and decided to focus on growing her organization by training her team and helping them grow their businesses as well. By September of 2015, Stephanie had achieved Level V, working eight to ten hours a week, and was earning more than her salary and commissions from the bank combined. “When we bought our house, we budgeted every last cent. I even cancelled my car insurance and was taking the bus. We couldn’t afford any extras, but suddenly we had breathing room and our future looked completely different—we were entertaining options we’d never had before.”

With the help of Stephanie’s R+F income, she and her husband were able to spend three weeks in Bora Bora and Maui for their honeymoon. “I never thought we’d be able to do something like that. It’s really incredible how this business can fit into your life however you want it to. We are now saving for our future and doing things we didn’t think we’d be able to afford for a very long time. I’ll even have the option to work part-time or leave my job completely when we do decide to have kids. It’s so empowering to plan our lives how we want instead of budgeting so tightly and figuring out how we are going to make it all work.” Stephanie is looking forward to a future in which she can be the mom she always hoped she could be. “I want to make sure I can be there for my kids, and now I know that I’ll be able to do that. I’ll have the freedom to play with them, make dinner, take vacations, and spend quality time with my family.”

Elias and Stephanie have enjoyed making their house a home and look forward to expanding their family.

Thankful for saying yes

Stephanie is grateful that she took a chance on herself and followed an entrepreneurial path. “I always wondered if I could run my own business—it’s something I always wanted to try, and I’m so glad I did. It’s pushed me to hone skills that I didn’t even know I had. It’s helped me develop into a stronger leader, and taught me that I really enjoy coaching and mentoring others. This opportunity has inspired me to focus more on others, and I love that my business gives me the chance to help people. I never felt passionate about customer service in my previous jobs, but the personal connection I have with my Customers and teammates makes me want to give my all to help them achieve their goals.”

Stephanie believes that we often limit ourselves by not being open to new opportunities. “I think a lot of people who come from a traditional job don’t quite understand how lucrative this business model can be. There are so many people who have professional backgrounds and have started their own R+F businesses—many of whom have replaced former corporate salaries— because they realized that this opportunity has the potential to be more rewarding than trading time for money or sitting behind a desk. You get out of this whatever you put in, but people tend to focus on the reasons why they can’t. Once we start telling ourselves the reasons why we can, a whole new world of possibilities opens up. We always say we’ll do things when things settle down, but that never happens. Our schedules will never clear up. Life keeps happening. I thought I was too busy at first and planned to wait until the summer to start, but I’m so glad I didn’t because, by that time, I’d already achieved Level V and am now so much farther ahead than I would have been. All I needed to do was go for it, and the results have been more than worth it.”

I truly loved your story… it helped me to identify and develop the strength of the third leg of my Why; (1) my product; (2) My partnership; and (3) my possibilities… this was the leg I needed to identify goals to shoot for. And reading about your goals helped me to focus on mine: (a) pay off mortgage; (b) take vacations; and (c) save money each month. I cannot tell you how this has helped me. This was part of my project for L2 Sprint for LV… I AIM TO ACHIEVE! THANK YOU.
