Wendy Grimm – Never Settle

Posted by Rodan + Fields on Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

Before Wendy Grimm started her Rodan + Fields business, she found herself struggling in more ways than one. She and her husband owned a landscaping company. Business was going well, but that meant working sun up to sun down and, for Wendy, many hours beyond. “At the time, I was working from home with two toddlers and a newborn, running the household, cooking, cleaning, and managing the busy office of my family’s small business. I felt like every minute I had my eyes open I was at a computer with a baby in my lap, doing my part to help keep our company thriving. It was tedious, time-consuming work, and I honestly was overdoing it.”

Unfortunately, working together as a couple was not beneficial for Wendy’s marriage. As the stress piled on, she felt more and more exhausted and disconnected from her husband. “I was existing in survival mode. I struggled with knowing my purpose in life beyond my role as a busy working mom. I felt incredibly lost.”

When a friend reached out to share the R+F opportunity, Wendy was instantly interested. “I had a lightbulb moment when I learned I would be partnering with Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, whose products I’d used before. Thanks to their efforts, I finally had the clear skin I was praying for. It gave me the priceless confidence I was lacking.”

Wendy immediately wanted to get involved in such a fantastic skincare brand. “More than that, though, I wanted something of my own to work for. I wanted to build something that inspired me and allowed me to grow as an individual. I immediately saw the vision and knew that Rodan + Fields was eventually going to give me a huge wingspan in life, in more ways than one. In January 2014 I started this unique venture with a purpose.”

Starting with R+F

Wendy started her business with small financial goals, mainly wanting to make payments on her new family SUV. But after receiving her first paycheck, Wendy started aiming higher. “With guidance from my Upline leaders Jenni Pilcher and Holly Brewer, things started to grow. I simply began to mirror what they did with their own businesses, working about 10 hours per week, connecting with as many people as I could.”

With her additional monthly earnings, Wendy was able to hire an assistant to do the landscape work she dreaded. “Slowly, I started to feel fulfilled, hopeful and somewhat happy. I also gained more opportunities to leave the house, which was something I couldn’t do much of with three small children at home. I am so thankful for family and especially my mom for all their help watching my babies.”

Time for a change

Later that year, Wendy and her husband were surprised with the announcement of baby number four. As soon as Jordan was born, Wendy started actively pursuing a second home so she could move back to Wilmington — the town where she felt happiest. “Living an hour away was idyllic in the beginning. We needed land and a neighborhood that allowed us to have trucks, trailers, and equipment in the yard. But it ended up hindering me personally because I felt completely isolated, with limited options for me and our kids. Our old house was too small for our growing family. I felt trapped. On top of all that, something was missing in my marriage. I ultimately thought creating some space would help.”

Circumstances within the marriage didn’t improve, though, and Wendy found herself having to completely support her four children. “At that point, I made the decision to work on a friendship instead of forcing a marriage that wasn’t working. Divorce is so, so sad, but although it was challenging, I saw happiness for both of us on the other side. The well-being of our children was and will always be the main thing for me. I wanted them to see two healthy, happy, people, no matter if we had two houses or one.”

Shifts in business

Because divorce is a heavy thing to experience, Wendy took a bit of a pause for a year with regard to her personal Rodan + Fields business. “I kept training and coaching my team, and I still took good care of my Customers. I kept showing up for events. But the meat and potatoes of growing a business is private, one-on-one conversations, and I couldn’t do that much in 2017 because I was paralyzed with sadness. But even despite that, my business still grew.”

Wendy is eternally grateful for Steel Magnolias, the team of Independent Consultants who stood by her side. “My team was there to rally behind me while I went through this tough time, and with their help, I feel like my head is right again. I’m happy, I’m confident, and I finally feel good again. Now I’m back doing what I did in the beginning of my R+F journey: working my tail off to make my business a big thing. I just love that part of my story. If you have the right tribe you really can go through some crazy stuff in life, and neither you nor your business will crumble.”

Here comes the sun

That challenging year also led to moments of joy. Wendy was able to sponsor her mother’s two volunteer trips to Haiti. And she has developed an easy friendship with her ex-husband. As of 2018, Wendy is newly and happily married to her high school sweetheart, Scott Grimm. “Scott is a wonderful person who has been a part of my life for more than 20 years. His heart is huge and he is such a blessing to me and my kids. He is the silver lining of all of this. With him, I’m finally happy and at peace.”

As a two-time RFX Circle Achiever, Wendy has experienced many meaningful moments of success over the course of her journey. “One of the highlights was my first RFX trip to London in 2017. Spending one-on-one time with Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields on that trip was incredible. It’s been amazing, having that Title and experiencing all those perks. But I’ll just be really honest — that’s not the part that does it for me. I am doing this for the freedom: time, financial, philanthropic…and because I know this is where I belong. I’m happy here and I’m so grateful this opportunity exists.”

You don’t have to settle
Today, Wendy still works hard to support her children and live comfortably with her family. “Right now I just want to grow my team, maintain what I’ve created, and watch my daughters join one day. And, because I have always been the “cheerleader type”, I really enjoy working with my Customers and my teammates. Helping others see their full potential in life inspires me like crazy, so leading a team and watching levels of success trickle down in my organization is everything.”

The main message Wendy wants to share with the world is that you don’t ever have to settle in life. “I wanted to be happy and I wanted to be free. I could not have done any of this without my Rodan + Fields business. I also think that what you believe and the state of your mind can influence so many outcomes in life. I definitely believe in the 80/20 rule: that 80 percent of people just go with the flow and do what they need to do get by. So many people settle. I relate more to the 20 percenters in the world — those who take risks, grab opportunities, and put themselves out there regardless of what might happen. You don’t have to settle in life, personally or professionally. There’s an amazing life out there if you’re willing to work for it and grow through what you go through.”

Tell Me More…

Best advice you’ve ever received? Since I was a little kid, my dad always told me: “YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS.”

Influential people in your R+F journey? Holly Brewer really took me under her wing in the beginning. She’s an amazing speaker and coach and has been like a light for me. But most important are my four kiddos. They inspire me to be my best, and I look to them to feel most alive. Everything I do is for them and their well-being.

Favorite book? Bridge to Terabithia. It’s a children’s novel, but I’ve loved it the most since elementary school!

Favorite moment? Watching my two best friends, Kristen and Amy Ludwig, earn their Lexus. That has been my favorite part: watching this gift of an opportunity trickle down to my amazing friends.

What hobby would you like to take up? I would like more time to garden (fruits veggies, herbs, and flowers) one day!
